Fri, Feb 12 - Firehouse Benefit Bluegrass Concert featuring the Blue River Bluegrass Band, Fire Station-10, 7:30 pm, 15020 Carrollton Blvd., Carrollton. The Blue River Bluegrass Band is a traditional bluegrass band from the Gloucester area. The band includes Bob Busic (guitar, vocals), Roy Hare (banjo, guitar, vocals), Warren Crusenberry (bass); and Don Hamadyk (mandolin, vocals). The Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department hosts it’s monthly benefit concert on the second Friday of each month. A donation of $5 for admission is requested. When Prometheus warns Pyrrha and Deucalion that Zeus intends to send a great flood to destroy the Earth, they provision a chest containing all the knowledge that humanity will need after the waters recede. Water Relics envisions the Museum as the couple’s ark—its architecture holding all that humanity will need as sea levels rise. Thompson and Alonzo add another layer to the myth, imagining a world where Pyrrha and Deucalion’s people do not die in the flood, but instead evolve to live underwater. Come follow the story as the duo moves from Huber Court to the Hofheimer Porcelain Galleries to the Kaufman Theater—progressing from the shallows to the deep—and becoming immersed in their underwater world. Pete Huttlinger had become widely known as one of the most awe-inspiring acoustic guitar players in the world. Pete Huttlinger died on January 15th. His sudden passing has left the music world stunned. To lose such a gifted musician at such and early age is always hard to understand. Pete was set to perform in Virginia Beach on February 13th 2016 for TFAM and our first reaction was to let everyone know of Pete’s passing and that there wouldn’t be a show. After a day to reflect the TFAM Board of Dirctors has decided to go ahead with the concert turning it into a tribute to Pete. This event will be FREE to attend but TFAM will be asking for donations to help with Pete’s wife Erin with medical bills.

Tue, Feb 23 - The President’s Lecture Series featuring Alan Gross, Ted Constant Convocation Center, 7:30 pm, 4320 Hampton Blvd. Norfolk. In 2009, Gross was abruptly arrested by Cuban officials, who accused him of working for American intelligence services. He was, in fact, working on a humanitarian project to improve wireless access for small communities across Cuba, with a special emphasis on helping Cuba’s small Jewish community. In March 2011, Gross was wrongfully convicted for “acts against the territorial integrity of the state,” and sentenced to 15 years in prison. During his captivity in Cuba, Gross spent 23 hours a day confined to a small jail cell, almost completely isolated from the outside world. His physical health and emotional well-being deteriorated over five long years, as he lost hope that he would ever return home alive. All lectures are free and open to the public.
