This year’s event will feature the Frightmare Shanty, Hayride of Horrors, and a new Haunted Forest. Construction of our centerpiece haunted house (the Frightmare Shanty) is already almost complete, with an even bigger and better footprint this year (almost 1000 square feet!) Performances will continue on 10/17-10/18, 10/24-10/25, and 11/1. Admission is $5 + a canned good for charity. Sun, Oct 12 - Third Annual South Norfolk Jordan Bridge River Run, 5K & Walk, Elizabeth River Boat Landing & Park, 6:30 am, 103 Poindexter Street, Chesapeake. The Jordan Bridge offers a convenient, alternative way to cross the Elizabeth River between South Norfolk (Chesapeake) and Portsmouth. Modern in both engineering and design, it replaced the existing Jordan Bridge that was closed in November 2008. The 5,375-foot-long, 169 foot high bridge features two 12-foot-wide traffic lanes, two 8-foot-wide shoulders and an 8-foot-wide pedestrian sidewalk. The pedestrian sidewalk is separated from traffic by a concrete barrier. The 5K race course will proceed out and back over the 169 foot bridge span making it the most challenging race course in the area treating you to panoramic views of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Portsmouth from the top. Sun, Oct 12 - Yorktown Tea Party of 1774 Reenactment, Riverwalk Landing stage, 12:45 - 1:45 pm, Water & Buckner streets, Yorktown. Costumed actors will present the 11th annual dramatic reenactment of the Yorktown Tea Party of 1774. Like the famous Boston Tea Party, the Yorktown event was a similar, though smaller, protest against Britain’s denial of rights to the American colonists, which led to the American Revolution. At Yorktown, patriots tossed chests of tea brought on a ship from England into the York River, in support of the people of Boston and in defiance of a tax on the tea that was imposed without approval from their own representatives.
