While that generation is long gone, the hall is still in business, the music is still performed and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band continues to tour the world. Fronting the band at this time is Allen Toussaint, one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B. An American musician, songwriter and record producer, Toussaint has crossed paths with many of music’s greats in his illustrious 40-year-plus career.
wed, Nov 5 - Ray LaMontagne, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, 7:30 pm, Town Center, Virginia Beach. With a voice that recalls a huskier, sandpapery version of Van Morrison and Tim Buckley, Ray LaMontagne joins such artists as Iron & Wine in creating folk songs that are alternately lush and intimately earthy. The songwriter was born in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1973; his parents split up shortly after his birth, and his mother began a pattern of moving her six children to any locale that could offer her employment and housing. As a result, LaMontagne grew up as the perennial new kid in school (when and if he went to school at all). He did graduate high school, however, and found himself working in a shoe factory in Maine when he heard Stephen Stills’ “Tree Top Flyer” on the radio. The song amounted to an epiphany for LaMontagne, who made up his mind on the spot to become a singer and musician.

Thu-Sat, Nov 6-8 - Macbeth, presented by the Core Theatre Ensemble, TCC Roper Performing Arts Center, Thu 8 pm, Fri 8 pm, Sat 8 pm, 340 Granby Street, Norfolk. An original adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth will be making its U.S. debut at the TCC Roper Performing Arts Center November 6-8, 2014. Developed and produced by the Core Theatre Ensemble, the production keeps in line with the company’s innovative approach to performance. “Timeless stories and classic characters can and should be reimagined, retooled, and reset,” says Edwin Castillo, co-director of Core Theatre Ensemble. “Whenever our company adapts a novel or short story into a production for the stage our aim is not only to tell the story in a new way, but to make our audiences want to re-read and re-experience the original work again.” The Tragedy of Macbeth, often a source of theatrical superstition by performers, is generally considered one of William Shakespeare most dark and powerful plays. It tells the story of a Scottish general who is told by witches he would one day become king. When his ambition takes over, murder, intrigue and of course tragedy are the results. This new vision of the show is set in modern times with producers promising an added emphasis on some of the play’s more supernatural elements.
Thu-Sat, Nov 6-8 - The Mousetrap, Williamsburg Players, Thu 8 pm, Fri 8 pm, Sat 2 pm & 8 pm, 200 Hubbard Ln, Williamsburg. A group of strangers is stranded in a boarding house during a snow storm, one of whom is a murderer. The suspects include the newly married couple who run the house, and the suspicions in their minds nearly wreck their perfect marriage. Others are a spinster with a curious background, an architect, a retired Army major, a strange little man who claims his car has overturned in a drift, and a jurist who makes life miserable for everyone. Enter a policeman, traveling on skis. He no sooner arrives when someone is killed. To get to the rationale of the murderer’s pattern, the policeman probes the background of everyone present, and rattles a lot of skeletons.

With the pieces scattered across the globe, Thor’s villainous brother Loki devises a scheme to clone its powers, inciting a threat that could not only decimate Earth but also obliterate the Universe.
Thu-Sun, Nov 6-9 - The Addams Family, A New Musical, Smithfield Little Theater, Thu Fri & Sat 8:00 pm, Sun 2:30 pm, 210 N. Church St. Smithfield. The last dead leaf of autumn falls from the Family Tree, and all is right with the morbid, macabre world of Gomez, Morticia, Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch. They’ve gathered - where else? - in the family graveyard, to celebrate life and death in a yearly ritual to connect with their past and ensure their future. The Addams Family also has every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents.

A 2014 Veer Music Award winner for Album of the Year (Sunlight Fever) and for Best Emerging Artist, The Framers have been steadily building momentum through their exciting live performances and accessible brand of indie country rock. For the uninitiated, Roebuck doesn’t just play the banjo; he attacks it. His style is powerful and naturally percussive on its own, but he takes his craft to a different level by beating out a rhythm on a bass drum and tambourine he carries on his back and controls with straps connected to boot spurs. $15

Sun, Nov 9 - ‘Perfessor’ Bill: Live Piano Accompaniment to Classic Silent Films, The American Theater, 2:30 pm, 125 E Mellen St, Hampton. Harpo Marx lasted just two weeks as a silent film pianist – and it’s no wonder. The poor fellow only knew two songs which he would rotate, speeding up or slowing down his fingers in hopes of fitting the music to the action on the screen. Luckily, not all players had such limited repertoires, and The American Theatre has invited the talented ‘Perfessor’ Bill to sit at our Steinway piano and do what he does best: improvise a score to great silent movie classics, on the fly. At the keyboard Bill conjures music with an appropriate mood, or with tempos that comment waggishly on the scenes, accentuating hairpin plot twists to play along. Bill Edwards discovered ragtime music when he was 6-years-old, and hasn’t been able to leave it alone since.
