Now thru Feb 24 - Hampton Roads Student Gallery, Hermitage Museum & Gardens, 7637 North Shore Road, Norfolk. The Hermitage is honored to display the finalist pieces in this year’s Hampton Roads Student Gallery from February 10-24. The Hampton Roads Student Gallery is an art competition open to all 11th and 12th grade students in the region. A panel of art professionals reviews student work and selects 6 Finalists and 20 Honorees whose work receives placement in Hampton Roads art institutions. The project celebrates the local art community by creating partnerships and valuable learning experiences for students and all those involved.

Sat, Feb 14 - African-American History Month Film Fest: “The Bicycle Corps: America’s Black Army on Wheels”, Virginia War Museum, 1:00 pm, 9285 Warwick Boulevard in Huntington Park, Newport News. In the 1890s, the U.S. Army believed it could replace horses with popular new “safety bicycles.” Testing this theory, the army sent 20 African-American soldiers on a 2,000-mile ride from Fort Missoula, Montana, to St. Louis, Missouri. This program traces the group’s route across the American West through the eyes of two riders: the enthusiastic white officer and a black first sergeant, whose experience guided and motivated the enlisted men. An original play with music that tells the tale of the most important incident in the history of the Underground Railroad in Ohio. The show follows the story of Addison White, a slave who escaped from Kentucky and traveled the Railroad north to the small town of Mechanicsburg, OH. There, he was befriended by a farmer named Udney Hyde. He lived in Hyde’s barn, working for his meals by day and learning to read and write with the help of Hyde’s daughter, Amanda, by night. Hyde was a suspected abolitionist, however, and it was not long before Addison was discovered by his former Master.
