Now thru Feb 24 - Hampton Roads Student Gallery, Hermitage Museum & Gardens, 7637 North Shore Road, Norfolk. The Hermitage is honored to display the finalist pieces in this year’s Hampton Roads Student Gallery from February 10-24. The Hampton Roads Student Gallery is an art competition open to all 11th and 12th grade students in the region. A panel of art professionals reviews student work and selects 6 Finalists and 20 Honorees whose work receives placement in Hampton Roads art institutions.  The project celebrates the local art community by creating partnerships and valuable learning experiences for students and all those involved.
Now thru Feb 28 - February Fun Month, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, 6700 Azalea Garden Rd., Norfolk. Admission to the Garden is $5 per person every day in February.  Bike riding is permitted on paved paths in the Garden all day long, all month long.
Now thru Mar 29 - Winter Orchid Display 2015, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, 6700 Azalea Garden Rd., Norfolk. Don’t miss the opportunity to see beautiful blooming orchids in the Norfolk Botanical Garden Tropical House. Many of the orchids provided by the Tidewater Orchid Society, and Old Dominion University Arthur and Phyllis Kaplan Orchid Conservatory and Research Greenhouse. This winter exhibit is FREE with regular Garden admission.
Now thru May 25 - Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog, Children’s Museum of Virginia, 221 High St., Portsmouth. Everyone’s favorite big red dog is coming to Portsmouth! Visitors young and young at heart will recognize all the sites and characters in “Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog” based on PBS’s hit series. From the Ferry and the Pier to Clifford and his dog house, visitors to Birdwell Island will enjoy all the sights and sounds in this exhibit. Targeted to children 2 - 8 year and their caregivers, the exhibit aims for immersion into the lives of Emily Elizabeth and Clifford while promoting Clifford’s Big Ideas. These simple ideas include: Share, Play Fair, Have Respect, Work Together, Be Responsible, Be Truthful, Be Kind, Believe in Yourself, Be a Good Friend and Help Others. Join us on opening day for a Big Red Party, with Museum Members receiving the first chance to view the exhibit starting at 8 am.
Thu, Feb 19 - Meet The Artist at Jester’s, Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 5 - 7:00 pm, 110 W. Finney Ave, Suffolk. We’re having an “Open House” to feature  our teaching artists for this event.  Some of their  work  will be displayed in Jester’s.  Current and future students can come and meet the instructors.  Artists will  be present and show their classrooms to prospectus students. There will be light refreshments.
Thu, Feb 19 - Third Thursday, Chrysler Museum of Art, 5 - 10:00 pm, One Memorial Place, Norfolk. At 6:30 pm in the Museum, artist and author Greta Pratt will present a special talk about her award-winning exhibition Nineteen Lincolns. The show is on view upstairs alongside Shooting Lincoln, a selection of Civil War-era photographs from the Chrysler Collection. At 7 pm a concert begins by Chesapeake’s seven-sibling sensation, The Hunts. Come see why their upcoming album is so highly anticipated. Tickets are available at the door for our normal Third Thursday admission price of $5. Third Thursdays are free for Museum Members, children, and students with current ID. Our cafe, Wisteria, will be open for dinner, and there’s a cash bar in both venues. At the Studio, it’s Glass, Form, and Sound as Alfred University professor Angus Powers plays glass horns in an analog-digital experiment. The night gets further funkified with electrobeats by DJ Doddie.

Sat/Sun, Feb 21/22 - Greenberg’s Train and Toy Show 2015, Virginia Beach Convention Center, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, 1000 19th St., Virginia Beach. Since 1976, Greenberg’s Train & Toy Show has been the largest traveling model train and toy show to serve the northeastern United States. The shows have been managed by Train Show, Incorporated since 2007 and have added new venues through the years to bring the show to even more places. All USA Cycling Road Race rules apply. In case of ice or snow a decision will be made on postponing event NLT 10:00 AM on race day and emailed to all pre-registered riders and posted to the Virginia Cycling list. Pack your pajamas and your sleeping bag and head over to The Mariners’ Museum on Friday, February 27 for our Battle of Hampton Roads Overnight. Designed for children ages 7 - 12 and their favorite adults, participants will join the navy and learn about life aboard the American Civil War ironclad Monitor. We’ll also learn about music from the Civil War, play 19th century games, and talk to a conservator who is helping protect the artifacts brought up from the Monitor wreck. Thu, Feb 19 - Out of the Box Music Series: ‘Mike Aiken’, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, 6:00 pm, Miller Studio Theatre, 201 Market Street, Virginia Beach. A new Sandler Center emerging artist series, Out of the Box takes place 6:00 - 9:00pm every Thursday from January 15 - March 5, 2015. The event is in collaboration with Paul Shugrue from Out of the Box on 89.5 WHRV. This series is free and open to the public and will feature live music from the region’s best acts. Refreshments available for purchase. Mike Aiken’s vast treasure chest of experiences and mastery of varied stringed instruments have contributed to a catalogue of music that cannot be defined by one genre or style. Originally from Western New York, he honed his skills playing in Blues, Southern Rock, and Country bands. He began his solo career as a songwriter and artist when he sailed out of the cold Great Lakes and eventually to the shores of coastal Virginia, where he resides on his sailboat today.

Country for Kids 2015, presented by PEOPLExpress, is the annual charity concert to benefit the Center in Hampton, Virginia. This year’s concert will be our 16th year and has featured artists such as Keith Urban, Little Big Town, Gary Allan, Phil Vassar, Rodney Atkins, Jo Dee Messina, Tracy Lawrence, and Chris Cagle to name a few over the years. Through the 1930s, Rabbi Roland Gittelsohn was an outspoken pacifist and political activist. But when World War II broke out, he voluntarily enlisted with the United States Navy. Gittelsohn became the first Jewish chaplain to serve in the United States Marine Corps, and provided vital support and guidance to Marines of all faiths at the Battle of Iwo Jima. Join author Lee Mandel as he explores the life of unlikely warrior Rabbi Gittelsohn, his decision to join the armed services, and the development of the Navy’s chaplains into a vital support for America’s fighting forces. Creedence Clearwater Revival founding members and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford have been on quite a ride. The Smith Funeral Home buried many people in caskets made by Slaughter Lumber Company during the tragic Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918. Founded in 2008, Old Beach Farmers Market is run entirely by volunteers as an independent 501(c)6 organization. We support local family farms, watermen, and Virginia wineries.
