LOCAL THEATER / CONCERTS / LECTURES / TALKS

Now thru May 10 - “Big River”, Regent University Theatre, Fri/Sat 7:30, Sun 2:30 pm, Main Theater, 1000 Regent University Drive, Virginia Beach. Book by William Hauptman, Music & Lyrics by Roger Miller, Adapted from the novel by Mark Twain, Directed by Derek Leonidoff. Travel the mighty Mississippi with Huck Finn and runaway slave Jim in Mark Twain’s soul-rousing tale of friendship and freedom. TIME magazine hails this Tony Award winner, “A classic American musical with the most fetching score of the decade.”

Now thru May 10 - “Bedroom Farce”, Peninsula Community Theater, 10251 Warwick Blvd., Newport News. By British playwright Alan Ayckbourn. A comedy that contains a melee of events involving certain philandering characters, all occurring within similar moments of one another. Alan Ayckbourn’s clever uses of time and space makes this a very intricate and sophisticated comedy while also portraying the deteriorating and rebuilding of relationships among young couples. This play explores the differences in relationships between the younger and older generations while capitalizing on certain unlikely issues that may strain the relationships even further.

Now thru May 17 - “The Producers”, Smithfield Little Theater, Thu-Sat 8:00 pm, Sat 2:00 pm, Sun 2:30 pm, 210 N Church St., Smithfield. By Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, Music and lyrics by Mel Brooks. Presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all “little old ladies”) out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive “Springtime For Hitler”), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction.

That was 40 years ago, and today the singers of Inti-Illimani still inspire audiences the world around. Their music, performed on more than 30 wind, string and percussion instruments, is rooted in traditional Latin American culture, capturing at once the very personal colors of their experiences while simultaneously appealing to the universal in us all.

David B. Rand (J.S.C. ret.). In April 1861 the United States of America was a country in turmoil. As a result of the attack by southerners upon Fort Sumter Lincoln called for volunteers to put down the rebellion. When Virginia seceded on April 17, 1861 Washington D.C. was surrounded by forces hostile to the Union. Lincoln took a radical step: he unilaterally suspended the only personal right included in the original U.S. Constitution, the writ of habeas corpus.
