Now thru Aug 23 - The 53rd Annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships, Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships is a major professional and amateur event for the Eastern Surfing Association (ESA). Each year, several hundred surfers from menehunes to masters compete for East Coast surfing titles, prizes, history and the sheer love of surfing. A hands-on interactive exhibit developed by the Children’s Museum of Cleveland opens in the changing gallery. From large scale sculptures to utilitarian wares and fine art, the exhibit offers a look at the contemporary wealth of ceramic arts being created in Virginia. This exhibit is co-curated by John Jessiman of Cub Creek Foundation, Appomattox; Steven Glass, artist in residence at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; and Gayle Paul, PACC.

Fri/Sat, Aug 28/29 - Great Dismal Swamp Safari, Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, 9:30 am - 1:30 pm, Suffolk. $10 adults; $8 seniors (60+), military, and children ages 3-12. The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari (bus tour), one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions, fills up quickly. Photography had emerged as a new way to record historic people and events during the Civil War. With the tragedy of Pres. Lincoln’s assassination in April of 1865, it was used to identify not only the crime scene and the suspects, but to document their incarceration and subsequent executions. Join historian Carson Hudson as he tells the story of the assassination through the examination and analysis of period photographs. Please note, some of the images may be disturbing to some visitors.
