Now thru Sep 20 - Butterfly House Exhibit, Norfolk Botanical Garden, 9:00 am - 7:00 pm, 6700 Azalea Garden Rd., Norfolk. The enclosed house provides an unbelievable opportunity to observe butterflies as they circle and land on their favorite nectar flowers providing guaranteed amazement and educational opportunities. It's the perfect complement to the 2.5 acre Bristow Butterfly Garden and the giant Butterfly Maze. Included with regular Garden admission.

Now thru Oct 15 - Bike Nights, Norfolk Botanical Garden, Mon/Wed/Thu 4 - 7:00 pm, 6700 Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk. Bring your bikes, helmets and family or friends out to Norfolk Botanical Garden and pedal through the petals. Norfolk Botanical Garden is home to 12 miles of pedestrian pathways. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 4 to 7 pm they are open to bikers! Regular Garden admission applies.

Now thru Oct 18 - Virginia Earth: Ceramic Art, Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center, 400 High Street, Portsmouth. From large scale sculptures to utilitarian wares and fine art, the exhibit offers a look at the contemporary wealth of ceramic arts being created in Virginia. This exhibit is co-curated by John Jessiman of Cub Creek Foundation, Appomattox; Steven Glass, artist in residence at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; and Gayle Paul, PACC.

Now thru Oct 18 - Reflections: Mark Chatterly & Alexey Terenin, Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center, 400 High Street, Portsmouth. Two artists from opposite sides of the world are brought together to share their explorations on the modern human condition. Mark Chatterly, from Michigan, invites the viewer to join him on a journey to explore man's odyssey from birth to death. Alexey Terenin, from Prague and Moscow, utilizes the heritages of these distinct cities to create a language of symbols and environments that is reminiscent of past histories.

Now thru Dec 7 - Roberley Bell: [un]Natural Landscapes, Hermitage Museum and Gardens, 7637 North Shore Road, Norfolk. Created specifically for the Hermitage, Roberley Bell's colorful, playful forms will delight visitors of all ages as they encounter pieces and plantings reminiscent of the museum outdoors and organic, biomorphic forms in conversation with the museum's collection indoors.

Now thru Dec 31 - MOCA Fall Exhibitions, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, 2200 Parks Avenue, Virginia Beach. Trenton Doyle Hancock's "Skin and Bones-20 Years of Drawing", an epic narrative surrounding the "Mounds" and a cast of colorful-and often not so colorful-characters who populate a wildly fantastic, invented landscape. Heather Bryant: "Grasp", her new work, where color takes center stage; Flecked watercolors, deep and intense, suggest a connection with the cosmos. Andrea Dezso: "Dreamtime", MOCA will present a selection of her "tunnel books," as well as a large scale installation, a giant tunnel book and diorama. Now thru Jan 31 - 'Liquid Light', The Mariners' Museum, 100 Museum Drive, Newport News. Everyone is invited to enjoy the new exhibit 'Liquid Light: Photography Beneath the Sea'! Liquid Light explores these ocean depths with black-and-white photography, capturing a quality of light that exists only underwater. There is a world beneath the sea unlike anything seen on land. Thu-Sun, Sep 10-13 - Glass Studio Visiting Artists: Toots Zynsky, Chrysler Museum of Art, One Memorial Place, Norfolk. Toot's Zynsky, known officially as Mary Ann, was working in Brooklyn in the early '80s when she began to fine-tune her signature technique of working in glass threads. Formally known as heat-formed filet de verre vessels, she combines centuries-old glass cane techniques with molds used inside a kiln to achieve the final shape. In 1983 Zynsky left for a three-week trip to Europe and wound up living abroad for 16 years. She's been based in Providence, R.I. since her return. While known for her skillful use of color, much of her work has been done in black, grey, and red, what she calls "powerful colors, life-and-death colors." She has work in more than 70 museum collections around the world.

Fri, Sep 11 - Farm-to-Table Dinner, Merchants' Square, 6:30 pm, Williamsburg. Chef David Everett created this annual event to showcase local meats and produce. Guests dine at one long table under a lighted tent on Merchant's Square. Each year the attendance grows, and more than 300 people are expected to attend this fifth year. Everett and his team of chefs serve up beer, ciders and locally sourced foods prepared at The Trellis Bar & Grill, Blue Talon Bistro and DoG Street Pub. Sat, Sep 12 - James River Regional Clean-up Day at Ragged Island Wildlife Refuge, Registration begins at 8:30 am, cleanup activities begin at 9:00 am, Parking area and access is on U.S. Highway 17 at the southern end of the James River Bridge. For many years, the James River Regional Cleanup has attracted hundreds of volunteers who roam the shorelines on foot and cruise the water in boats to clean up trash, an effort that is a tremendous benefit to the river, its wildlife, and the people who visit and enjoy the river. The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari (bus tour), one of Suffolk's most popular attractions, fills up quickly. This four-hour tour is led by a biologist specializing is the unique habitat of the Great Dismal. Learn about the history, lore, vegetation and wildlife with this adventure that includes a brief walk to Lake Drummond. Sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended.
