Now to June 24 - Mount Trashmore Summer Carnival, 310 Edwin Dr., Virginia Beach. Hours of operation are 6 pm - 11 pm during the week, and 2 pm - 11 pm on the weekends. Rides, games and traditional state fair foods re all available at the Summer Carnival at Mount Trashmore Park. Located in the parking lot off Edwin Drive, the carnival is great for all ages and offers free admission and free parking. Ride prices - Single Tickets: $1 each (each ride takes 2-6 tickets); Monday, Wednesday & Friday: $18 wristband (unlimited rides); Twelve Buck Tuesday: $12 wristband; Dollar Day Thursday: All rides $1 each; Saturday & Sunday: $20 wristband. June 11 - Suffolk Farmers' Market, at the Pavilion, 524 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434 (At the corner of Constance Rd. & Main St. in Historic Downtown Suffolk), Wed: 3-6 pm; Sat: 9 am - 1 pm. The Suffolk Farmers' Market is a popular outlet for locally grown fruits and vegetables, baked goods, organically raised poultry, fresh eggs and milk, honey and a variety of artisan-crafted goods. Free and open to the public, the Market will host a variety of Family Fun Days, special guest speakers and performers, petting zoos, book signings, workshops, crafts and more. June 11 - Spring Lecture Series: William Tsutsui on his book, Godzilla on My Mind-Fifty Years of the King of Monsters, at The Mariners' Museum/USS Monitor Center, 7 pm. One of the premiere lecture series in Hampton Roads, The Mariners' Museum Lecture Series offers Museum members and Hampton Roads residents dynamic and memorable stories of mankind's relationship with the sea. June 12 - Farmers' Market at City Center, City Center at Oyster Point, 700 Town Center Dr., Newport News, 10 am - 2 pm. A collection of products that are straight from the farm! Includes locally grown fruits and vegetables, seafood, plants, herbs, baked goods, free range chickens, pork, bison, bath products, fresh bread and dog treats. June 12 - Sunset on the River, Hermitage Museum & Gardens, N. Shore Rd., Norfolk, 6 - 9 pm. Every other Thursday in May and June, the Hermitage hosts a local concert. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Cash bar-no outside alcohol allowed. Food will also be available for purchase. Come enjoy live music on the back lawn of the Hermitage! This week, Major and the Monbacks have revived the party infused energy of southern soul, blending this old school style with danceable pop melodies, ska, and soul horn riffs. 

June 12 - Thursdays by the Lake, The Mariners' Museum/USS Monitor Center, 100 Museum Dr., Newport News, VA, 6 pm. Join the museum for its annual concert series on the banks of Lake Maury, overlooking the full-scale replica of the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor. June 12 - Poetry Night, Peninsula Fine Arts Center, Newport News. 6 pm, FREE. Delight in the spoken word at PFAC's monthly Poetry Night, offered at 6 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month. Area writers Leah Price, Felicia Mason, Terri Osburn and Elvy Howard will share readings from their fiction works. Anyone is welcome to share poems, both original and old favorites, in a welcoming, artful atmosphere!

June 12-15 - Virginia MOCA's Boardwalk Art Show, presented by PNC Bank, Thu: noon-8 pm, Fri: 10 am-6 pm, Sat: 10 am-6 pm, Sun: 10 am-5 pm. The Boardwalk Art Show is one of the oldest and most respected outdoor fine art shows on the Eastern seaboard, and this summer will mark our 59th year. This four-day festival is one of the most popular in Virginia, attracting collectors and artists from across the nation (300 in fact!) with an average attendance of more than 250,000. The show runs along the Virginia Beach boardwalk from 19th Street to 33rd Street, overlooking the sandy beach and Atlantic Ocean. This year we're giving families a special day at the Boardwalk. Come celebrate Family Fest on Saturday, June 14th all day at 24th Street Park where you can create, explore, be entertained and most of all, have fun boardwalk style.  And for those of you looking to keep the fun going, visit us at 31st Street Park for Boardwalk Art Show On Tap. June 13 - The Annual "Professional Shrine Rodeo", Khedive Shrine Center, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA. The Rodeo is a Professional Championship Rodeo sanctioned by the Southern Rodeo Association. There will be calf roping, bucking horses, barrel racing, bull riding, and the Rodeo Clowns. June 13-14:  27th Annual Cock Island Race.  Known as the largest sailing event on the East Coast. Several classes of sailboats race up and down the Elizabeth River, but the race is not just for professionals. Causal boaters hit the water, too. The race kicks off with concerts and food Friday night and ends Saturday evening with an awards ceremony and more live music.

June 14:  Life's a Beach Triathlon, Buckroe Beach and Park, Hampton.  Life's A Beach encourages people to "catch the new wave of triathlon," with its unique take on a sport most people often associate with grueling training regimes and expensive, high-tech equipment. The Life's A Beach swim is 200 yards of "Almost Anything Goes," with racers allowed to use boogie boards, swim fins, mask and snorkels, water wings, and almost anything else to help them feel comfortable and have fun. The bike portion of the race is only five miles and is for fat tire bikes only-beach cruisers and mountain bikes-as some courses may actually involve stretches of beach riding. The two-mile beach run is laid back and includes some of the Life's A Beach challenges-obstacles to break up the run in a fun way. Awards will be given to the Top Dudes and Dudettes, Top Slackers, Most Bodacious Bike Decorating, and Coolest Costume. There will be an Awards Ceremony and Bodacious Beach Bash After-Party following the event. Hours: 8:00am - 2:00 pm

June 7 - Great Dismal Swamp Safari. Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, 9:30 am - 1:30pm. $10 adults; $8 seniors (60+), military, and children ages 3-12. The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari, one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions, fills up quickly. This four-hour tour is led by a biologist specializing is the unique habitat of the Great Dismal. Learn about the history, lore, vegetation and wildlife with this adventure that includes a brief walk to Lake Drummond. Sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. May 30 - The Tidewater Concert Band, Willet Hall, Portsmouth, 7:30 pm. The Tidewater Concert Band has provided musical entertainment for Hampton Roads, Virginia since 1971. The band is made up of volunteers of all ages and walks of life who love to come together and make music. The band was organized in Portsmouth, VA, in February of 1971 by the late David Mitchell, a longtime band director at Churchland High School. David called on former band students, local band directors and other interested local musicians in the area to form a fully instrumented top-notch community band. The band provided a centerpiece performance at Yorktown's Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. It has experienced many phases and musicians throughout its long history, and continues today to provide quality music and service to the community. The band provides music for the graduation ceremonies of Tidewater Community College. It performs at local parades, celebrations, art shows, festivals, and concert series and provides entertainment at local retirement and nursing homes. May 31/June 1 - The 15th Annual Blackbeard Pirate Festival. Downtown Hampton and Mill Point Park. Once a year visitors from all over the country enjoy the sights and sounds of 18th century Hampton overrun by pirates. Hampton's waterfront comes alive with dozens of pirate re-enactors, costumed in historically accurate garb, who transform today's Hampton into the busy seaport of yesterday. Led by Blackbeard the Pirate himself, re-enactors help visitors step back in time and re-live the history and legends of 1718 Hampton. The Festival offers a variety of children's activities, live musical entertainment, fireworks, period vendors, arts and crafts, and much more! Festivities kick off Friday, May 30, from 7-11 p.m. with the Grand Pirates Ball at the Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina Hotel. It will include a bounty of food, adult beverages and live music. May 23-26 - 2014 Langley Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show, Hosted by the Gloucester and Langley Kennel Clubs. Hampton Roads Convention Center, Hampton.  Hosted by the Gloucester and Langley Kennel Clubs, this highly anticipated event is expected to draw over 4,000 spectators and 1,500 dogs. This year's highlights will include four days of obedience trials, four days' worth of AKC RallyR, and a free Junior Showmanship clinic. The event will feature over 30 vendors offering unique pet merchandise not generally available in the Hampton Roads region.

May 24 - Contraband Day Commemorative Event, Cannon Park, Fort Monroe. A day of activities commemorating 153rd anniversary of the 'Contraband Decision' at Fort Monroe. Living history tours, and children's activities at the Casemate Museum feature the children's book "Under the Freedom Tree" by Susan VanHecke and illustrated by London Ladd. Opening ceremony at 10 am at Cannon Park Living history walking tours begin at Cannon Park at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. Tours are approximately 45 minutes. May 24 - Family Great Adventure Series. All about Discovery and Entertainment at the Virginia Beach oceanfront! Families can take part in an interactive adventure that leads them to various sites along the boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue to unravel a mystery. Sometimes the adventures involve games and contests right on the beach. During each adventure, participants can dress up as characters, use "brain and brawn" to win the contest at hand, and settle into the sand for a family-friendly movie shown on a giant inflatable screen on the beach! 

May 24 - Hampton Downtown Block Party, Queens Way, Downtown Hampton, 6-11 pm. Folk-rock, rockabilly surf band from Russia and California, the Red Elvises have 11 studio albums. Also featuring The Judy Chops, roots band from Shenandoah with a that mixes vintage and modern for a raucous time. Join the party in Downtown Hampton every Saturday night, with live music on Queens Way between Kings Way and Wine St.

May 24 - 35th Annual Elizabeth River Run.  ERR will be held on the exciting and scenic course in Portsmouth, Virginia. With magnificent views of the Elizabeth River, participants will traverse through Olde Towne with its towering monuments, museums, historical homes and the Portsmouth sea wall. Following the race will be a post-race celebration at the spectacular nTelos Pavilion.

May 24-26 - 11th Annual Steel Pier Classic & Surf Art Expo, sponsored by Coastal Edge. The Virginia Longboard Federation (VLF) gets together every Memorial Day Weekend at the best surfing destination in Virginia Beach, affectionately known as The Jetty to promote the art of surfing. Through the efforts of this organization, The VLF has generated a dynamic surfing contest that is a fun, family atmosphere for people to enjoy from all over the country. May 26 - 130th Portsmouth Memorial Day Parade.  A Portsmouth tradition since 1884.  Annually, the Memorial Day Parade salutes the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and celebrates Portsmouth's proud military heritage.  This year's parade will include floats, marching band units, armed forces units, lots of excitement and much more.

May 26 - Hampton Memorial Day Ceremony, The Hampton National Cemetery (Located On the campus of Hampton University), 10:00-11:00 am.  The Department of Veterans Affairs will honor the men and women who paid the ultimate price for the country's freedom with a special Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 26, at 10 am at the Hampton National Cemetery, Cemetery Road at Marshall Avenue. Volunteers are needed to help distribute flags to grave sites on Friday, May 23, starting at 8 am. Volunteers will also be needed to take up the flags on Tuesday, May 27, starting at 8 am.

May 26 - Chesapeake Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, 11 a.m. in front of City Hall.  The keynote speaker will be Colonel Alberto E. Cruz. This year's ceremony will include a special tribute to Chesapeake's Vietnam War dead. Indian River High School teacher, Craig Blackman and his 45 Advanced Placement United States History students worked on a semester-long project this year to identify and learn more about the 25 Chesapeake veterans who gave their lives during the Vietnam War. These men as well as others who served will be honored at the ceremony. Special music for the program will be provided by the Western Branch High School Band and a piper from the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office. The national anthem will be sung by Kathy Williams. After some brief remarks, prayers, and playing of "Taps" we will replace the flags of over 70 know veteran's graves. May 20-23 - Ducky Days, Chrysler Museum of Art Glass Studio. In honor of Florentijn Hofman's Rubber Duck visiting the Chrysler, come to the Glass Studio and make your very own cast-glass duckie. Sessions will start at the top of every hour except noon, as that's when we hold our free daily glassblowing demonstrations, and they will run from 10 am to 4 pm.

May 23-26 - 2014 Langley Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show, Hosted by the Gloucester and Langley Kennel Clubs. Hampton Roads Convention Center, Hampton.  Hosted by the Gloucester and Langley Kennel Clubs, this highly anticipated event is expected to draw over 4,000 spectators and 1,500 dogs. This year's highlights will include four days of obedience trials, four days' worth of AKC RallyR, and a free Junior Showmanship clinic. The event will feature over 30 vendors offering unique pet merchandise not generally available in the Hampton Roads region.

May 24 - Family Great Adventure Series. All about Discovery and Entertainment at the Virginia Beach oceanfront! Families can take part in an interactive adventure that leads them to various sites along the boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue to unravel a mystery. Sometimes the adventures involve games and contests right on the beach. During each adventure, participants can dress up as characters, use "brain and brawn" to win the contest at hand, and settle into the sand for a family-friendly movie shown on a giant inflatable screen on the beach! 

May 24 - Hampton Downtown Block Party, Queens Way, Downtown Hampton, 6-11 pm. Folk-rock, rockabilly surf band from Russia and California, the Red Elvises have 11 studio albums. May 24-25 - 2014 Pungo Strawberry Festival is held on Memorial Day weekend. This year we are estimating attendance of 120,000 over the two day event. May 26 - Hampton Memorial Day Ceremony, The Hampton National Cemetery (Located On the campus of Hampton University), 10:00-11:00 am.  The Department of Veterans Affairs will honor the men and women who paid the ultimate price for the country's freedom with a special Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 26, at 10 am at the Hampton National Cemetery, Cemetery Road at Marshall Avenue. Volunteers are needed to help distribute flags to grave sites on Friday, May 23, starting at 8 am. Volunteers will also be needed to take up the flags on Tuesday, May 27, starting at 8 am.

May 26 - Chesapeake Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, 11 a.m. in front of City Hall.  The keynote speaker will be Colonel Alberto E. Cruz. This year's ceremony will include a special tribute to Chesapeake's Vietnam War dead. Indian River High School teacher, Craig Blackman and his 45 Advanced Placement United States History students worked on a semester-long project this year to identify and learn more about the 25 Chesapeake veterans who gave their lives during the Vietnam War. These men as well as others who served will be honored at the ceremony. Special music for the program will be provided by the Western Branch High School Band and a piper from the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office. The national anthem will be sung by Kathy Williams. If you're looking for something to do this week/weekend, there are plenty of options:

NORFOLK
Norfolk’s everything it’s quacked up to be!  Get Ready for Great (Big) Weekend May 16-18, 2014.

In celebration of the grand re-opening of the Chrysler Museum of Art, come see Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s Rubber Duck project. It’s a 40-foot rubber duck floating in the waters just outside of the museum’s front door.  It’s way too big to miss, just like the Big weekend of festival fun in Norfolk May 16-18.

May 15:  Hermitage Museum, Sunsets on the River.  Every other Thursday in May and June, the Hermitage hosts a local concert.  Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets.  Cash bar—no outside alcohol allowed. Food will also be available for purchase.  This week's music is from Local Musician Jesse Chong.  Jesse Chong's music covers a wide variety of genres including reggae, funk, Americana, and pop/rock making him a favorite among the iPod generation and jam bands alike. 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Come enjoy live music on the back lawn of the Hermitage.

May 15-18: Norfolk Greek Festival.  The region’s oldest and largest ethnic celebration, the Norfolk Greek Festival includes traditional Greek cuisine, entertainment, arts and crafts, and even a Drive-Thru. It’s great Greek hospitality, free and fun for the whole family.

This modern twist on the circus caravan is complete with original music, theatrical costumes and lighting. Shows at 5:30, 7:00, & 8:30 pm, Part of the Virginia Arts Festival. There will also be Delicious Food Trucks, Incredible DJs, Cold Drinks, Live Music, and Inspired Performances. May 17-18:  2014 Spring Stockley Gardens Arts Festival.  In its 30th year, on the third full weekend in May, people flock to Stockley Gardens in Norfolk’s historic Ghent neighborhood to browse through jewelry, pottery, paintings, and other works of art by over 130 artists. The park is full of strollers and dogs and tantalizing smells. Music drifts from the stage. Friends stop to chat. And throughout the weekend, there is a feeling of hope.

May 17-18:  13th Annual Virginia Beer Festival, Town Point Park. This is one of the most popular Beer Festivals in the mid-Atlantic Region and promises to be a day full of good beer, good friends, and good fun. Spend the afternoon sampling beer from all over the world. International premium beers, hand crafted domestics and local brews comprise a selection of over 125 tap handles. The event features live music, great food and, of course, great beer.

VIRGINIA BEACH
May 16-18:  Beach Music Cruise-In.  On the Beach at 30th Street, at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  Combining bands on the beach and cars on the boardwalk, blends the best of the “oldies” with dancing under the stars in a jam-packed blast to the past!  Settle into the sand as the top Beach Music bands from up and down the East Coast descend on the Virginia Beach oceanfront in a nostalgic salute to the “good old days” of cool cars and hot tunes.  Stroll the boardwalk to view classic cars, hot rods, antiques, and more.  A three-day series of free concerts is presented on a stage built right on the beach at 30th Street.  Evening concerts on Friday give way to a full day of entertainment on Saturday and more daytime concerts on Sunday.
The car show feature turns the boardwalk into a local version of “Route 66,” with cars and trucks from yesterday and today competing for trophies and Best in Show cash prizes.  The car show will be on Saturday, May 17, from 10:00am-4:00pm.

May 17:  Town Center Corvette Showcase.  Town Center, Virginia Beach.  The Town Center Corvette Showcase is a premier classic car show featuring one of the most impressive collections of Corvettes of yesterday and today ever assembled.  Participants showcase their vehicles and compete for cash prizes and trophies in various categories. The Town Center Corvette Showcase is open to both individual car owners as well as car clubs. There will be a nominal registration fee for participants but will be free for spectators.  The Pre-Registration fee is $20 per vehicle/$25 per vehicle day of the Showcase. A portion of the entry fees will benefit local Virginia Beach charities.

May 17: 11th Annual International Neptune Fest Wine Festival.  Neptune's Park, 31st St. Atlantic Ave. Oceanfront, VB. Save the packing, the passports, and the jetlag...Travel the world with Neptune Festival’s International Spring Wine Festival!  31st Street Park is transformed into a hub of tasting stations from around the world with wines from 9 countries, each featuring blends and styles that are sure to ignite the traveler in you.

May 17-18:  Pirate Party on the Beach.  17th Street Park at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  This family-friendly event features two days of activities designed to bring out the “pirate” in everyone!  Costume contests, games, a treasure hunt, pirate re-enactors, and movie on the beach all combine to celebrate those scallywags we all wish we could be: pirates!
On Saturday dress like a pirate and enter the costume contest!  Also on Saturday, participate in Cap’n Pete’s Treasure Hunt at 5:30pm and then settle in the sand at 7:45pm for the animated film “Pirates: Band of Misfits” – to be shown on a giant screen, right on the beach!
On both days, enjoy arts and crafts and displays by participating museum organizations like the Old Coast Guard Station and Mariner's Museum.
Other activities throughout the weekend include bandana-making, face-painting, storytelling, weapons demonstrations, and strolling entertainers.
On Sunday, enter your team in the Pirates Challenge, which will test your skill in several physical challenges, all pirate-themed.  Winning teams receive cash prizes and trophies!  There is an entry fee for teams in the Pirates Challenge.

May 15-18: Chesapeake Jubilee, Chesapeake City Park.  This year's event features music from Uncle Kracker, Colt Ford and the fun and exciting Roots & Boots Tour by country music superstars Aaron Tippin, Joe Diffie and Sammy Kershaw.  As always, don’t miss our Annual Fireworks Extravaganza produced by the world famous Zambelli Fireworks!  The Jubilee will again host the Annual Chesapeake Kiwanis Club Shrimp Feast and the Annual BBQ Cook-off Competition, sanctioned by the world famous Kansas City Barbeque Society.  In addition to great Music and Food, Amusements of America, one of the nation’s premier carnival operators will be on site with thrilling rides and game. May 17: Plein Air Painting Event at Fort Monroe, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM at Charles H. Taylor. Beautiful and unusual architecture is one on the highlights with the 1834 stone fortress, including moat, the largest in America.
