Now thru Jul 26 - Frank Lloyd Wright’s Samara, Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center, 400 High Street, Portsmouth. The Samara house, also known as John E. Christian House, was built between 1954 and 1956 in West Lafayette, Indiana. The exhibition explores the creation of a Wright house through the eyes of a client who spent more than fifty years fulfilling the renowned architect’s Usonian vision. Wright used the term “organic” to convey his belief that every feature of the house, from the structure, to the interior, to the smallest details and objects, should be as one, expressive of a single idea.

Fri-Sun Jul 24-26 - Mid-Summer Fantasy Festival, Town Point Park, park opens at 7:30 pm, performances begin at 8:00 pm, Waterside Drive, Norfolk. Norfolk Festevents presents an interactive performance art event that will emerge in Town Point Park, July 24th-26th, 2015, and will explore a meditation of Shakespearean themes with visual and performance artists, large scale art installations, musicians and event designers. This exuberant three day event is free and open to the public of all ages. Audiences are invited to dress up, bring a lawn chair or blanket, and wait to become part of the story or wander through the large scale art installations to create their own unique experience. From all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, that of painting with colored sand ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite. In Tibetan this art is called dul-tson-kyil-khor, which literally means “mandala of colored powders.”

Nat Turner, leader of the Slave Insurrection of 1831, is a fascinating, controversial and important historical character. To some he is evil – a murderer. To others he is heroic – a freedom fighter. Wray has done what scholars do – turn to the confessions of Nat Turner, but she does one better than history, she also uses folklore, legend and her own imaginings.
