Sat, Jul 18 - Civil War Lecture Series: Where Two Opposing Forces Meet, Mariners' Museum, 2:30 - 3:30 pm, 100 Museum Drive, Newport News. By John V. Quarstein, Chief Development Officer of the USS Monitor Foundation. Besides the epic battle of Hampton Roads, the Battle of Mobile Bay is one of the most iconic engagements of the Civil War at sea. This encounter pitted the Civil War’s only two full admirals, David Glasgow Farragut and Franklin Buchanan, in a classic confrontation for the control of the blockade runners’ haven Mobile Bay. Farragut’s clarion call to action, “Damn the Torpedoes…Full Speed Ahead,” as his fleet stalled in front of Fort Morgan when the USS Tecumseh had been sunk by a torpedo, is one of naval history’s greatest statements. Both admirals provided inspirational leadership during this battle on August 5, 1864, which witnessed a major Union victory.

They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fan base, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. Wed, Jul 22 - Concert at the Beach: 'Matisyahu', Neptune Park Stage, 7 to 11:00 pm, 31st Street, Oceanfront, Virginia Beach. In the world of reggae, there is "roots music" and "dancehall music." Dancehall music is like it sounds, popular music to get you up and dance. No message necessary. Whereas roots music digs into the life the artist -- revealing troubles and spiritual trials -- and occasionally delivers a message of hope and inspiration. Matisyahu, the Jewish singer-songwriter, who first achieved notoriety as a Hasidic reggae artist with a hip-hop style and inspiring Jewish lyrics, is generally known for both. And though he has long since shed his exclusively Hasidic reggae identity, he has continued to make what is essentially great dancehall music with an underlying message -- that is, until now.
