Now thru May - Bike Nights, Norfolk Botanical Garden, Mon/Wed/Thu 4 - 7:00 pm, 6700 Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk. Bring your bikes, helmets and family or friends out to Norfolk Botanical Garden and pedal through the petals. Norfolk Botanical Garden is home to 12 miles of pedestrian pathways. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. they are open to bikers! Regular Garden admission applies.

Now thru Jul 26 - 'Above the Fold' Exhibit, Hermitage Museum & Gardens, 7637 North Shore Road, Norfolk. See the Hermitage completely transformed for our spring exhibit. Wander through the various rooms of the Sloane mansion to discover innovative origami from nine internationally-acclaimed artists. 


Thu, May 21 - Third Thursday, Chrysler Museum of Art, 5 - 10:00 pm, One Memorial Place, Norfolk. At the Museum, it's Sushi & Sake at 6 pm, learn how to roll up your rice from Head Chef Chris Boehme of Wisteria by Cuisine & Company and pick up a sushi sample and some great recipes to try at home. Thu, May 21 - Red Sails and Ales, American Rover, Town Point Park, 6:30 pm, Waterside Drive, Downtown Norfolk. Join us the third Thursday of every month for a craft beer tasting.  A representative from the Smartmouth Brewing will be on board to discuss the brewing process while you enjoy a smooth sunset cruise under sail on the Elizabeth River.  A barbecue dinner from Beach Bully and live music by our ship's musician are also included. $40 per person (Ages 21 and up)


Thu-Mon, May 21-25 - Mexican Tall Ship Visit, Town Point Park, Thu 1-4:00pm, Fri-Sun 10:00 am - 8:00 pm, Mon Ship Departs, Waterside Drive, Norfolk. The CUAUHTEMOC, commissioned under the Mexican Navy, sails with 55 officers, 74 cadets and 120 enlisted crew members.  Launched in July 1982, the vessel is 270 ft. with her homeport in Acapulco, Mexico. The CUAUHTEMOC serves Mexico as the training vessel for the Mexican Navy, a role she has fulfilled for more than twenty years.  She participates in worldwide tall ship events while teaching the essential elements of seamanship and navigation, taking more than one hundred cadets to sea for each of its cruises. The program helps develop individual leadership skills and teambuilding skills while at sea.


Fri, May 22 - Great Dismal Swamp Safari, Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, 9:30 am - 1:30 pm, Suffolk. $10 adults; $8 seniors (60+), military, and children ages 3-12.The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari, one of Suffolk's most popular attractions, fills up quickly. This four-hour tour is led by a biologist specializing is the unique habitat of the Great Dismal. Learn about the history, lore, vegetation and wildlife with this adventure that includes a brief walk to Lake Drummond. Sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. A small snack and beverage is provided. This tour is not recommended for very small children. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. Fri-Mon, May 22-25 - 16th Annual NHSCA National Duals, Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th Street, Virginia Beach. The National Duals is wrestled over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. This is an opportunity to determine the best club/state teams in the country for the Elementary, Middle School, and High School divisions. The National Wrestling Duals is the largest dual meet team event in the history of scholastic wrestling. Last year, 187 teams, with over 3,000 individual wrestlers representing 14 states competed in this event. It is an honor to represent your club or state and compete in "The Battle at the Beach". Sat, May 23 thru Jul 26 - Frank Lloyd Wright's Samara, Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center, 400 High Street, Portsmouth. The Samara house, also known as John E. Christian House, was built between 1954 and 1956 in West Lafayette, Indiana. The exhibition explores the creation of a Wright house through the eyes of a client who spent more than fifty years fulfilling the renowned architect's Usonian vision. Wright used the term "organic" to convey his belief that every feature of the house, from the structure, to the interior, to the smallest details and objects, should be as one, expressive of a single idea.

Commemorate the 154 anniversary of three enslaved men, Frank Baker, James Townsend, and Sheppard Mallory seeking freedom behind Union lines at Fort Monroe. The ceremony will conclude with choral song and a candlelight procession and vigil.

Annually, the Memorial Day Parade salutes the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and celebrates Portsmouth's proud military heritage. Mon, May 25 - Norfolk Dedicates Trail of Honor during Memorial Day Ceremony, 10:00 am, Nauticus & Battleship Wisconsin, One Waterside Drive, Norfolk. Norfolk will honor the ultimate sacrifice of military men and women during its annual Memorial Day Ceremony. The ceremony will take place at Wisconsin Square, adjacent to the Lone Sailor statue. As part of the ceremony, the city will dedicate the Norfolk Trail of Honor, nine plaques featuring the names of Norfolk service members who received the Medal of Honor. Plaques include Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, World War II and Vietnam. Included among the names is the first African-American, SGT William Carney, to earn the Medal of Honor and PFC Jacklyn "Jack" Lucas, the youngest Marine ever, to receive the award. The ceremony is hosted by Mayor Paul D. Fraim, members of Norfolk City Council and members of the Veterans Affairs Commission. Thelma Drake is the featured speaker.

Mon, May 25 - Memorial Day Ceremony, Tidewater Veterans Memorial Park, 12 - 1:00 pm, Jefferson Ave. and 19th Street, across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The annual Memorial Day Ceremony, sponsored by the  Mayor's Veterans Committee is held to honor and pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces, "who gave their all." The 2015 keynote speaker is Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (AW/NAC) Mike D. Stevens. This event is free and open to the public. Military personnel, their families and all citizens are invited to participate. Citizens who would like to place an American flag (provided) around the base of the memorial are encouraged to arrive before the ceremony. The flags will remain in place for one week.

An African-village based puppet show, where the main character Keni the Kenkeni, the smallest of the African base drums, learns to strengthen and build his self-esteem by recognizing that although he may be the smallest, his role is just as important as all of the other base drums.

Sat, May 30 - Asian-American History Month Film Fest: "The Silent Glory", Virginia War Museum, 1:00 pm, 9285 Warwick Boulevard in Huntington Park, Newport News. The museum will host a film festival during the month of May featuring films with depicting Asian-Americans' in the military.  All movies are free with each day's paid admission. "The Silent Glory" - During World War II, many young Japanese Americans from internment camps volunteered to fight for the country that had turned its back on them. Yet the 442nd Regimental Combat Team would go on to become one of the most decorated units in U.S. military history. General Mark Clark said of them: "Best damn fighters in the U.S. Army. Send me more!" Their rescue of the lost battalion is considered one of the greatest missions of the war.
