May 30 - 2nd Annual Steampunk: Visions of Futures Past - Opening Event, Hampton History Museum, 6-9 pm, $5. Friday night event: music by Uglyography and The Framers, belly dancing from Wicked Hips, and sideshow with feats of strength and daring-do. Experience the work of artists and craftspeople whose vehicles, weaponry, and gadgets conjure up a time when airships were commonplace and steam power ruled the world; an alternative Victorian era and an imagined Wild West frontier. May 30 - The Tidewater Concert Band, Willet Hall, Portsmouth, 7:30 pm. The Tidewater Concert Band has provided musical entertainment for Hampton Roads, Virginia since 1971. The band is made up of volunteers of all ages and walks of life who love to come together and make music. The band was organized in Portsmouth, VA, in February of 1971 by the late David Mitchell, a longtime band director at Churchland High School. David called on former band students, local band directors and other interested local musicians in the area to form a fully instrumented top-notch community band. The band provided a centerpiece performance at Yorktown's Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. It has experienced many phases and musicians throughout its long history, and continues today to provide quality music and service to the community. The band provides music for the graduation ceremonies of Tidewater Community College. It performs at local parades, celebrations, art shows, festivals, and concert series and provides entertainment at local retirement and nursing homes. May 30/June 1 - Virginia Beach Patriotic Festival. Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The Patriotic Festival celebrates our Armed Forces with a weekend full of concerts and military displays at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, including an Oceanfront Air Show each day from 12-3 pm. Being home to one of the largest concentrations of military installations in the United States, Hampton Roads is proud of its military heritage. May 30/June 24 - Mount Trashmore Summer Carnival, 310 Edwin Dr., Virginia Beach. Hours of operation are 6 pm - 11 pm during the week, and 2 pm - 11 pm on the weekends. Rides, games and traditional state fair foods re all available at the Summer Carnival at Mount Trashmore Park. Located in the parking lot off Edwin Drive, the carnival is great for all ages and offers free admission and free parking. May 31 - Family Movies on the Lawn presents The Karate Kid (PG), nTelos Wireless Pavilion, Downtown Portsmouth, Gates open at 7:30 pm. Join us at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion, Saturday's in May for some quality family time at the "FAMILY MOVIES ON THE LAWN" movie series. This event is FREE and open to the public. Parking is also FREE in all City of Portsmouth parking garages and lots. Although the movies begin at dusk, attendees are encouraged to arrive early to find a good viewing spot on the lawn. May 31/June 1 - The 15th Annual Blackbeard Pirate Festival. Downtown Hampton and Mill Point Park. Once a year visitors from all over the country enjoy the sights and sounds of 18th century Hampton overrun by pirates. Hampton's waterfront comes alive with dozens of pirate re-enactors, costumed in historically accurate garb, who transform today's Hampton into the busy seaport of yesterday. Led by Blackbeard the Pirate himself, re-enactors help visitors step back in time and re-live the history and legends of 1718 Hampton. The Festival offers a variety of children's activities, live musical entertainment, fireworks, period vendors, arts and crafts, and much more! Festivities kick off Friday, May 30, from 7-11 p.m. with the Grand Pirates Ball at the Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina Hotel. It will include a bounty of food, adult beverages and live music. May 23-26 - 2014 Langley Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show, Hosted by the Gloucester and Langley Kennel Clubs. Hampton Roads Convention Center, Hampton.  Hosted by the Gloucester and Langley Kennel Clubs, this highly anticipated event is expected to draw over 4,000 spectators and 1,500 dogs. This year's highlights will include four days of obedience trials, four days' worth of AKC RallyR, and a free Junior Showmanship clinic. The event will feature over 30 vendors offering unique pet merchandise not generally available in the Hampton Roads region.

May 24 - Contraband Day Commemorative Event, Cannon Park, Fort Monroe. A day of activities commemorating 153rd anniversary of the 'Contraband Decision' at Fort Monroe. Living history tours, and children's activities at the Casemate Museum feature the children's book "Under the Freedom Tree" by Susan VanHecke and illustrated by London Ladd. Opening ceremony at 10 am at Cannon Park Living history walking tours begin at Cannon Park at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. Tours are approximately 45 minutes. Children's activities at the Casemate Museum begin at 12:30 pm.

May 24 - Family Great Adventure Series. All about Discovery and Entertainment at the Virginia Beach oceanfront! Families can take part in an interactive adventure that leads them to various sites along the boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue to unravel a mystery. Sometimes the adventures involve games and contests right on the beach. During each adventure, participants can dress up as characters, use "brain and brawn" to win the contest at hand, and settle into the sand for a family-friendly movie shown on a giant inflatable screen on the beach! 

May 24 - Hampton Downtown Block Party, Queens Way, Downtown Hampton, 6-11 pm. Folk-rock, rockabilly surf band from Russia and California, the Red Elvises have 11 studio albums. Also featuring The Judy Chops, roots band from Shenandoah with a that mixes vintage and modern for a raucous time. Join the party in Downtown Hampton every Saturday night, with live music on Queens Way between Kings Way and Wine St.

May 24 - 35th Annual Elizabeth River Run.  ERR will be held on the exciting and scenic course in Portsmouth, Virginia. With magnificent views of the Elizabeth River, participants will traverse through Olde Towne with its towering monuments, museums, historical homes and the Portsmouth sea wall. Following the race will be a post-race celebration at the spectacular nTelos Pavilion.

May 24-25 - 2014 Pungo Strawberry Festival is held on Memorial Day weekend. This year we are estimating attendance of 120,000 over the two day event. May 24-26 - 11th Annual Steel Pier Classic & Surf Art Expo, sponsored by Coastal Edge. The Virginia Longboard Federation (VLF) gets together every Memorial Day Weekend at the best surfing destination in Virginia Beach, affectionately known as The Jetty to promote the art of surfing. Through the efforts of this organization, The VLF has generated a dynamic surfing contest that is a fun, family atmosphere for people to enjoy from all over the country. The name of the contest is derived from the Virginia Beach Steel Pier, which was located at the Va. Beach Oceanfront's very own First Street, circa the 1960's. May 26 - 130th Portsmouth Memorial Day Parade.  A Portsmouth tradition since 1884.  Annually, the Memorial Day Parade salutes the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and celebrates Portsmouth's proud military heritage.  This year's parade will include floats, marching band units, armed forces units, lots of excitement and much more.

May 26 - Hampton Memorial Day Ceremony, The Hampton National Cemetery (Located On the campus of Hampton University), 10:00-11:00 am.  The Department of Veterans Affairs will honor the men and women who paid the ultimate price for the country's freedom with a special Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 26, at 10 am at the Hampton National Cemetery, Cemetery Road at Marshall Avenue. Volunteers are needed to help distribute flags to grave sites on Friday, May 23, starting at 8 am. Volunteers will also be needed to take up the flags on Tuesday, May 27, starting at 8 am.

May 26 - Chesapeake Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, 11 a.m. in front of City Hall.  The keynote speaker will be Colonel Alberto E. Cruz. This year's ceremony will include a special tribute to Chesapeake's Vietnam War dead. Indian River High School teacher, Craig Blackman and his 45 Advanced Placement United States History students worked on a semester-long project this year to identify and learn more about the 25 Chesapeake veterans who gave their lives during the Vietnam War. These men as well as others who served will be honored at the ceremony. Special music for the program will be provided by the Western Branch High School Band and a piper from the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office. The national anthem will be sung by Kathy Williams. May 26 - Newport News Memorial Day Concert, City Center at Oyster Point, Gates open at 5 pm.  Virginia Arts Festival proudly presents a Memorial Day Concert with the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band. Raise your flag, raise your spirits and celebrate this proud holiday! Come out early and enjoy patriotic performances, grab some delicious food and picnic on the lawn! Free admission and parking.

May 26 - Grace Episcopal Church Memorial Day Ceremony, Historic Grace Episcopal Church, 111 Church Street, Yorktown VA , 10-11 am. After some brief remarks, prayers, and playing of "Taps" we will replace the flags of over 70 know veteran's graves. Including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Worlds Wars 1 & 2, Korea, Cold War, and Vietnam with " Honors."  Free. For more information please call 757-898-3261.

May 20-23 - Ducky Days, Chrysler Museum of Art Glass Studio. In honor of Florentijn Hofman's Rubber Duck visiting the Chrysler, come to the Glass Studio and make your very own cast-glass duckie. Sessions will start at the top of every hour except noon, as that's when we hold our free daily glassblowing demonstrations, and they will run from 10 am to 4 pm. 

May 21 - Front Porch Music Series Concert at the Hampton History Museum. Tim Morgan and the Mojo Brothers, 6 pm

May 21 - Food Truck Hump Days on the Great Bridge Waterways, from 4 pm - Dusk! Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, join us at 1775 Historic Way, Chesapeake, VA. Includes locally grown fruits and vegetables, seafood,plants, herbs, baked goods, free range chickens, pork, bison, bath products, fresh bread and dog treats. May 23-26 - 2014 Langley Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show, Hosted by the Gloucester and Langley Kennel Clubs. Hampton Roads Convention Center, Hampton.  Hosted by the Gloucester and Langley Kennel Clubs, this highly anticipated event is expected to draw over 4,000 spectators and 1,500 dogs. This year's highlights will include four days of obedience trials, four days' worth of AKC RallyR, and a free Junior Showmanship clinic. The event will feature over 30 vendors offering unique pet merchandise not generally available in the Hampton Roads region.

May 24 - Yorktown Market Days. Chischiak Green, Water Street, Yorktown, 8 am - 12 pm. Fresh produce, meat and seafood, baked goods, coffee, specialty cut flowers, quality art, entertainment and much more await you at the Saturday morning Market Days. This week's live entertainment is by "Ron Fetner". Free.

May 24 - Contraband Day Commemorative Even, Cannon Park, Fort Monroe. A day of activities commemorating 153rd anniversary of the 'Contraband Decision' at Fort Monroe. Living history tours, and children's activities at the Casemate Museum feature the children's book "Under the Freedom Tree" by Susan VanHecke and illustrated by London Ladd. Opening ceremony at 10 am at Cannon Park Living history walking tours begin at Cannon Park at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. Tours are approximately 45 minutes. Children's activities at the Casemate Museum begin at 12:30 pm.

May 24 - Family Great Adventure Series. All about Discovery and Entertainment at the Virginia Beach oceanfront! Families can take part in an interactive adventure that leads them to various sites along the boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue to unravel a mystery. Sometimes the adventures involve games and contests right on the beach. During each adventure, participants can dress up as characters, use "brain and brawn" to win the contest at hand, and settle into the sand for a family-friendly movie shown on a giant inflatable screen on the beach! 

May 24 - Hampton Downtown Block Party, Queens Way, Downtown Hampton, 6-11 pm. Folk-rock, rockabilly surf band from Russia and California, the Red Elvises have 11 studio albums. Also featuring The Judy Chops, roots band from Shenandoah with a that mixes vintage and modern for a raucous time. May 24 - 35th Annual Elizabeth River Run.  ERR will be held on the exciting and scenic course in Portsmouth, Virginia. May 24-25 - 2014 Pungo Strawberry Festival is held on Memorial Day weekend. This year we are estimating attendance of 120,000 over the two day event. May 26 - Hampton Memorial Day Ceremony, The Hampton National Cemetery (Located On the campus of Hampton University), 10:00-11:00 am.  The Department of Veterans Affairs will honor the men and women who paid the ultimate price for the country's freedom with a special Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 26, at 10 am at the Hampton National Cemetery, Cemetery Road at Marshall Avenue. Volunteers are needed to help distribute flags to grave sites on Friday, May 23, starting at 8 am. Volunteers will also be needed to take up the flags on Tuesday, May 27, starting at 8 am.

May 26 - Chesapeake Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, 11 a.m. in front of City Hall.  The keynote speaker will be Colonel Alberto E. Cruz. This year's ceremony will include a special tribute to Chesapeake's Vietnam War dead. Indian River High School teacher, Craig Blackman and his 45 Advanced Placement United States History students worked on a semester-long project this year to identify and learn more about the 25 Chesapeake veterans who gave their lives during the Vietnam War. These men as well as others who served will be honored at the ceremony. Special music for the program will be provided by the Western Branch High School Band and a piper from the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office. The national anthem will be sung by Kathy Williams. NORFOLK
Norfolk’s everything it’s quacked up to be!  Get Ready for Great (Big) Weekend May 16-18, 2014.

In celebration of the grand re-opening of the Chrysler Museum of Art, come see Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s Rubber Duck project. It’s a 40-foot rubber duck floating in the waters just outside of the museum’s front door.  It’s way too big to miss, just like the Big weekend of festival fun in Norfolk May 16-18.

May 15:  Hermitage Museum, Sunsets on the River.  Every other Thursday in May and June, the Hermitage hosts a local concert.  Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets.  Cash bar—no outside alcohol allowed. Food will also be available for purchase.  This week's music is from Local Musician Jesse Chong.  Jesse Chong's music covers a wide variety of genres including reggae, funk, Americana, and pop/rock making him a favorite among the iPod generation and jam bands alike. 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Come enjoy live music on the back lawn of the Hermitage.

May 15-18: Norfolk Greek Festival.  The region’s oldest and largest ethnic celebration, the Norfolk Greek Festival includes traditional Greek cuisine, entertainment, arts and crafts, and even a Drive-Thru. It’s great Greek hospitality, free and fun for the whole family.

May 17-18:  2014 Spring Stockley Gardens Arts Festival.  In its 30th year, on the third full weekend in May, people flock to Stockley Gardens in Norfolk’s historic Ghent neighborhood to browse through jewelry, pottery, paintings, and other works of art by over 130 artists. The park is full of strollers and dogs and tantalizing smells. Music drifts from the stage. Friends stop to chat. And throughout the weekend, there is a feeling of hope.

This is one of the most popular Beer Festivals in the mid-Atlantic Region and promises to be a day full of good beer, good friends, and good fun. Spend the afternoon sampling beer from all over the world. International premium beers, hand crafted domestics and local brews comprise a selection of over 125 tap handles. The event features live music, great food and, of course, great beer.

VIRGINIA BEACH
May 16-18:  Beach Music Cruise-In.  On the Beach at 30th Street, at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  Combining bands on the beach and cars on the boardwalk, blends the best of the “oldies” with dancing under the stars in a jam-packed blast to the past!  Settle into the sand as the top Beach Music bands from up and down the East Coast descend on the Virginia Beach oceanfront in a nostalgic salute to the “good old days” of cool cars and hot tunes.  Stroll the boardwalk to view classic cars, hot rods, antiques, and more.  A three-day series of free concerts is presented on a stage built right on the beach at 30th Street.  Evening concerts on Friday give way to a full day of entertainment on Saturday and more daytime concerts on Sunday.
The car show feature turns the boardwalk into a local version of “Route 66,” with cars and trucks from yesterday and today competing for trophies and Best in Show cash prizes.  The car show will be on Saturday, May 17, from 10:00am-4:00pm.

May 17:  Town Center Corvette Showcase.  Town Center, Virginia Beach.  The Town Center Corvette Showcase is a premier classic car show featuring one of the most impressive collections of Corvettes of yesterday and today ever assembled.  Participants showcase their vehicles and compete for cash prizes and trophies in various categories. The Town Center Corvette Showcase is open to both individual car owners as well as car clubs. There will be a nominal registration fee for participants but will be free for spectators.  The Pre-Registration fee is $20 per vehicle/$25 per vehicle day of the Showcase. A portion of the entry fees will benefit local Virginia Beach charities.

May 17-18:  Pirate Party on the Beach.  17th Street Park at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  This family-friendly event features two days of activities designed to bring out the “pirate” in everyone!  Costume contests, games, a treasure hunt, pirate re-enactors, and movie on the beach all combine to celebrate those scallywags we all wish we could be: pirates!
On Saturday dress like a pirate and enter the costume contest!  Also on Saturday, participate in Cap’n Pete’s Treasure Hunt at 5:30pm and then settle in the sand at 7:45pm for the animated film “Pirates: Band of Misfits” – to be shown on a giant screen, right on the beach!
On both days, enjoy arts and crafts and displays by participating museum organizations like the Old Coast Guard Station and Mariner's Museum.
Other activities throughout the weekend include bandana-making, face-painting, storytelling, weapons demonstrations, and strolling entertainers.
On Sunday, enter your team in the Pirates Challenge, which will test your skill in several physical challenges, all pirate-themed.  Winning teams receive cash prizes and trophies!  There is an entry fee for teams in the Pirates Challenge.

May 15-18: Chesapeake Jubilee, Chesapeake City Park.  This year's event features music from Uncle Kracker, Colt Ford and the fun and exciting Roots & Boots Tour by country music superstars Aaron Tippin, Joe Diffie and Sammy Kershaw.  As always, don’t miss our Annual Fireworks Extravaganza produced by the world famous Zambelli Fireworks!  The Jubilee will again host the Annual Chesapeake Kiwanis Club Shrimp Feast and the Annual BBQ Cook-off Competition, sanctioned by the world famous Kansas City Barbeque Society.  In addition to great Music and Food, Amusements of America, one of the nation’s premier carnival operators will be on site with thrilling rides and game. May 17: Plein Air Painting Event at Fort Monroe, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM at Charles H. Taylor. Friday, May 9:  PANorama Caribbean Music Fest.  24th Street Park at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The PANorama Caribbean Music Fest is a musical adventure set to the soothing sounds of steel pan music. The festival’s casual atmosphere appeals to the island community and people of all ages who are intrigued by the unique sounds and style of steel drum music! Fusing together the rhythm of steel bands, ocean breezes, and great Caribbean food, the breathtaking Virginia Beach oceanfront becomes an “island paradise” for the weekend.      
Co-produced with the Virginia Arts Festival, the PANorama Caribbean Music Festival at its core is a steel drum band competition featuring over 20 high school, college, and community bands from throughout the United States. Bands attend workshops on Friday at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. These workshops are led by nationally-known steel drum artists and educators.
Friday evening features a concert in the 24th Street Park.  On Saturday bands compete for ratings and the coveted Grand Champion Award. In the evening, steel drum headliners play on the main stage. All performances are free to the public.

Friday thru Sunday, May 9-11:  SonRise Music Festival.  On the Beach at 30th Street, at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The oceanfront will come alive with the sounds of “positive/alternative” music presented on the beach and in the sand. This completely family-friendly event will be held on the beach at 30th Street and feature positive/alternative artists offering a myriad of musical genres such as cutting edge top 40, hip hop, indie, and inspirational. Many of the featured artists can be found on Billboard’s Top 100 in the Positive Music genre. In addition, family activities comprised of comedians, children’s fun tent, speakers, contests, and more round out a weekend sure to entertain, motivate, and inspire.

Friday thru Sunday, May 9-11: Kalbones Off Road Monsters on the Beach. On the Virginia Beach Oceanfront beach between 5th and 7th Streets. Monsters are taking over the beach at Kalbones Off Road Monsters on the Beach, presented by Pungo Off Road!  This wildly-popular event brings thrills and chills to the Virginia Beach oceanfront as monster trucks battle for ultimate sand domination! This family-targeted event is loud, fast, and exciting. A course is built right on the beach at 6th Street, with bleachers overlooking from the boardwalk.  Sand dunes and junk cars combine to make the race course fast and fun for drivers and spectators alike. This is a ticketed event, with prices designed to fit the family budget.  Each of the four shows is approximately two hours in length.

Saturday, May 10:  Town Center Art & Wine Festival.  Town Center, Virginia Beach.  A unique opportunity to enjoy visual and gastronomic arts in the same setting. While the late spring sun bathes the Fountain Plaza, artists of all types display their creations at the festival. At the same time, international wine favorites sit side-by-side with the best of Virginia wineries in a sampling of new and classic vintages. The Town Center Art & Wine Festival is the perfect event to leisurely examine cutting-edge art while sampling the very latest in the vintner’s art.
Admission tickets will be sold for the wine portion of the event.  Each ticket includes a commemorative wine-tasting glass and tastings throughout the day.

Saturday, May 10: Hampton Downtown Block Party - Rock meets bluegrass. Join the party in Downtown Hampton every Saturday night, with live music on Queens Way between Kingsway and Wine St. Carolina band The New Familiars plays nitty-gritty roots music of the Appalachia with the guitar-drenched-drum-driven anthems of rock & roll. With Holy Ghost Tent Revival and Josh Daniel/Mark Elliott Schimick Project.

Saturday, May 10: Family Movies on the Lawn presents ‘Planes (PG)’. Join us at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion, Saturday’s in May for some quality family time. This event is FREE and open to the public. Parking is also FREE in all City of Portsmouth parking garages and lots. Although the movies begin at dusk, attendees are encouraged to arrive early to find a good viewing spot on the lawn, gates open at 7:30 pm. Blankets and sand chairs are recommended. Concessions will be open with food and beverage options as well.

Saturday-Sunday, May 10-11:  44th Gosport Arts Festival - Historic Olde Town Portsmouth.  This major Hampton Roads event features 150 juried artists and artisans displaying two- and three-dimensional works.  Held on the High Street corridor in Historic Olde Towne, the event includes arts demonstrations, live music, food vendors, a children’s area and a silent auction.
