LOCAL THEATER / CONCERTS / LECTURES / TALKS

Now thru Sep 27 - “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”, The Musical, The Little Theatre of Norfolk, Fri/Sat 8:00 pm, Sun 2:30 pm, 801 Claremont Ave., Norfolk. Book by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson, Music and Lyrics by Carol Hall. The Chicken Ranch has been known since the 1850s as one of the better pleasure palaces in all of Texas. Governors, senators, mayors, and even victorious college football teams frequent Miss Mona’s cozy bordello until that puritan nemesis Watchdog focuses his righteous indignation on the institution. This hilarious musical was famously adapted into a movie with Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds. Contains strong language and adult situations. http://www.ltnonline.org/

Now thru Oct 3 - “City of Angels”, Williamsburg Players, Thu-Sat 8:00 pm, Sat 2:00 pm, 200 Hubbard Ln., Williamsburg. Directed by Chris Hull, Book By Larry Gelbart, Music By Cy Coleman, Lyrics By David Zippel, Vocal arrangements by Cy Coleman and Yaron Gershovsky. City of Angels is the rarest of musical comedies; one that is not only loaded with music and written in the contemporary jazz idiom, but also filled with sidesplitting comedy. Set in the glamorous, seductive Hollywood of the 40’s, the world of film studios and flimsy negligees, the show chronicles the misadventures of Stine, a young novelist, attempting a screenplay for movie producer/director, Buddy Fidler.

Now thru Oct 4 - “Steel Magnolias”, Little Theatre of Virginia Beach, Fri/Sat 8:00 pm, Sun 2:30 pm, 550 Barberton Drive, Virginia Beach. By Robert Harling, Directed by Kathy Strouse. The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on their underlying strength - and love - which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad. For more information call 757-428-9233, or visit: www.ltvb.com?
