May 29 - Sunsets on the River, Hermitage Museum, Norfolk, 6 pm. The Michael Clark Band. Every other Thursday in May and June, the Hermitage hosts a local concert. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Cash bar-no outside alcohol allowed. Food will also be available for purchase.  R&B, Blues, Soul, Rock, Jazz, Funk. May 29 - Virginia Symphony Orchestra: Light Chamber, Hampton Arts at the American Theater, 7:30 pm, $25/$30. Experience the Virginia Symphony in a new way... up close and personal! The John Duffy Composers Institute is dedicated to the inspiration, creation, and performance of new music for the stage, and each spring offers five composers the opportunity to nurture their new work in the stellar company of faculty and performers. May 30 - 2nd Annual Steampunk: Visions of Futures Past - Opening Event, Hampton History Museum, 6-9 pm, $5. Friday night event: music by Uglyography and The Framers, belly dancing from Wicked Hips, and sideshow with feats of strength and daring-do. Experience the work of artists and craftspeople whose vehicles, weaponry, and gadgets conjure up a time when airships were commonplace and steam power ruled the world; an alternative Victorian era and an imagined Wild West frontier. The Exhibit will be open from 9 am to 5 pm Sat/Sun.

May 30 - Friday Night Adventures, Newport News Park Discovery Center, 13560 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News. Every Friday, meet a park naturalist to discover facts about some of the park's natural and historical features. Programs include nature walks, video presentations and/or hands on activities. May 30 - The Tidewater Concert Band, Willet Hall, Portsmouth, 7:30 pm. The Tidewater Concert Band has provided musical entertainment for Hampton Roads, Virginia since 1971. The band is made up of volunteers of all ages and walks of life who love to come together and make music. The band was organized in Portsmouth, VA, in February of 1971 by the late David Mitchell, a longtime band director at Churchland High School. David called on former band students, local band directors and other interested local musicians in the area to form a fully instrumented top-notch community band. The band provided a centerpiece performance at Yorktown's Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. It has experienced many phases and musicians throughout its long history, and continues today to provide quality music and service to the community. The band provides music for the graduation ceremonies of Tidewater Community College. It performs at local parades, celebrations, art shows, festivals, and concert series and provides entertainment at local retirement and nursing homes. May 30 - Virginia Symphony: Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 110 West Finney Avenue, 8pm. $25. May 30 - Blackbeard Festival Grand Pirates Ball, Crowne Plaza Hotel, 7-11 pm. A banquet of fine food, beer, and pirate's grog as well as rousing pirate music to entertain. Tickets available at Parks & Recreation Office 5th floor or by calling 727-6348. 

May 30/June 1 - Virginia Beach Patriotic Festival. Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The Patriotic Festival celebrates our Armed Forces with a weekend full of concerts and military displays at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, including an Oceanfront Air Show each day from 12-3 pm. Being home to one of the largest concentrations of military installations in the United States, Hampton Roads is proud of its military heritage. Main Concerts at 5th Street Beach Stage - Friday: The Band Perry, w/ Logan Brill (gates open at 5 pm, show at 7 pm). Saturday: Jake Owen, w/ Cadillac Three (gates open at 5 pm, show at 7 pm). Sunday: Little Big Town, w/ Sam Hunt (gates open at 3 pm, show at 4 pm).

May 30/June 24 - Mount Trashmore Summer Carnival, 310 Edwin Dr., Virginia Beach. Hours of operation are 6 pm - 11 pm during the week, and 2 pm - 11 pm on the weekends. Rides, games and traditional state fair foods re all available at the Summer Carnival at Mount Trashmore Park. Located in the parking lot off Edwin Drive, the carnival is great for all ages and offers free admission and free parking. Ride prices - Single Tickets: $1 each (each ride takes 2-6 tickets); Monday, Wednesday & Friday: $18 wristband (unlimited rides); Twelve Buck Tuesday: $12 wristband; Dollar Day Thursday: All rides $1 each; Saturday & Sunday: $20 wristband. Games and concession are priced separately.

May 31 - Yorktown Market Days. Chischiak Green, Water Street, Yorktown, 8 am - 12 pm. Fresh produce, meat and seafood, baked goods, coffee, specialty cut flowers, quality art, entertainment and much more await you at the Saturday morning Market Days. May 31 - Suffolk Farmers' Market, at the Pavilion, 524 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434 (At the corner of Constance Rd. & Main St. in Historic Downtown Suffolk), 9 am - 1 pm. The Suffolk Farmers' Market is a popular outlet for locally grown fruits and vegetables, baked goods, organically raised poultry, fresh eggs and milk, honey and a variety of artisan-crafted goods. Free and open to the public, the Market will host a variety of Family Fun Days, special guest speakers and performers, petting zoos, book signings, workshops, crafts and more. May 31 - American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Tidewater Community College, 120 Campus Drive, begins at Noon. Come out to celebrate life and to remember loved ones lost to Cancer. May 31 - BMX racing at Gosnold's Hope Park, 6:30 pm. The track has free loaner bikes and helmets for any one that would like to give BMX racing a try. This is a sport for all ages. Everyone is matched by their age and skill level to make the racing fair and fun. Come out to the track and have a fun filled evening.

May 31 - Discovery Hour. Newport News Park Discovery Center, 13560 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News. Every Saturday from May 10th through August 30th, discover special facts about the wildlife living in our area, find fun activities in the parks, and meet new friends while learning about our natural environment. May 31 - Hayrides, Newport News Park Discovery Center, 13560 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, 7-9 pm. Enjoy park interpretation and discussion on this 40 minute ride through the campground and bikeway. Complimentary tickets are available at the Campsite Office 30 minutes prior to each ride. Space is limited. All participants must be present to receive a ticket.

May 31 - Family Movies on the Lawn presents The Karate Kid (PG), nTelos Wireless Pavilion, Downtown Portsmouth, Gates open at 7:30 pm. Join us at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion, Saturday's in May for some quality family time at the "FAMILY MOVIES ON THE LAWN" movie series. This event is FREE and open to the public. Parking is also FREE in all City of Portsmouth parking garages and lots. Although the movies begin at dusk, attendees are encouraged to arrive early to find a good viewing spot on the lawn. Blankets and sand chairs are recommended. Concessions will be open with food and beverage options as well.

May 31/June 1 - The 15th Annual Blackbeard Pirate Festival. Downtown Hampton and Mill Point Park. Once a year visitors from all over the country enjoy the sights and sounds of 18th century Hampton overrun by pirates. Hampton's waterfront comes alive with dozens of pirate re-enactors, costumed in historically accurate garb, who transform today's Hampton into the busy seaport of yesterday. Led by Blackbeard the Pirate himself, re-enactors help visitors step back in time and re-live the history and legends of 1718 Hampton. The Festival offers a variety of children's activities, live musical entertainment, fireworks, period vendors, arts and crafts, and much more! Festivities kick off Friday, May 30, from 7-11 p.m. with the Grand Pirates Ball at the Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina Hotel. It will include a bounty of food, adult beverages and live music. May 31/June 1 - Seventh Annual 3D Sand Soccer shootout, Buckroe Beach Park. This sand soccer tournament and benefit is a great draw for players and spectators, as well as community members looking for a fun family-friendly activity. Participating non-profit organizations charge a fee for the activity booth of their choosing (e.g. face painting, horse shoes, bounce house, etc.). June 1 - Great American Clean-up, City of Chesapeake, 8 am - 5 pm. The BIGGEST cleanup campaign of the year! Help keep Chesapeake Beautiful by involving your group in a cleanup or beautification project. Please register two weeks prior to your selected date. June 1 - Double Clutch Bass Fishing Tournament, at The Baja Restaurant, Sandbridge, Virginia Beach, 8 am - 4 pm. This annual bass fishing tournament is a fundraising event benefiting a scholarship in memory of Bob Aaron. The tournament will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2014 with weigh in, awards ceremony and Beach Party at the Baja Restaurant in Sandbridge, Virginia Beach! June 1 - Peninsula Town Center Farmer's Market, Hampton, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm.  Vendor's include fresh flowers, jams, breads, seafood, veggies, and more. Live music by the 'Grace Street Jazz Trio'.

June 1 - Big Bands on the Bay, featuring 'The Original Super Band'. End the weekend with a sunset celebration on the Chesapeake Bay.  Guests are invited down to the Gazebo at Ocean View Beach Park for live Big Band music and dancing with 'The Original Super Band'. Welcome the stars every Sunday night from 7 to 9 pm.
