Local Events Tidewater, VA



If you're looking for something to do this week/weekend, there are plenty of options:

NORFOLK
Norfolk’s everything it’s quacked up to be!  Get Ready for Great (Big) Weekend May 16-18, 2014.

In celebration of the grand re-opening of the Chrysler Museum of Art, come see Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s Rubber Duck project. It’s a 40-foot rubber duck floating in the waters just outside of the museum’s front door.  It’s way too big to miss, just like the Big weekend of festival fun in Norfolk May 16-18.

May 15:  Hermitage Museum, Sunsets on the River.  Every other Thursday in May and June, the Hermitage hosts a local concert.  Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets.  Cash bar—no outside alcohol allowed. Food will also be available for purchase.  This week's music is from Local Musician Jesse Chong.  Jesse Chong's music covers a wide variety of genres including reggae, funk, Americana, and pop/rock making him a favorite among the iPod generation and jam bands alike. 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Come enjoy live music on the back lawn of the Hermitage.

May 15-18: Norfolk Greek Festival.  The region’s oldest and largest ethnic celebration, the Norfolk Greek Festival includes traditional Greek cuisine, entertainment, arts and crafts, and even a Drive-Thru. It’s great Greek hospitality, free and fun for the whole family.

May 16:  TGIF - Party in the Plaza. Norfolk Scope Plaza. Featuring Cirque Mechanics - Witness feats of contortion, Chinese poles and trapeze all on a 22' high stage-like mechanical apparatus. This modern twist on the circus caravan is complete with original music, theatrical costumes and lighting. Shows at 5:30, 7:00, & 8:30 pm, Part of the Virginia Arts Festival. There will also be Delicious Food Trucks, Incredible DJs, Cold Drinks, Live Music, and Inspired Performances. Music from: Bantustans, Wandcarver, DJs - Aetgy and CanRock; and Live Painting by Berk Visual.

May 17-18:  2014 Spring Stockley Gardens Arts Festival.  In its 30th year, on the third full weekend in May, people flock to Stockley Gardens in Norfolk’s historic Ghent neighborhood to browse through jewelry, pottery, paintings, and other works of art by over 130 artists. The park is full of strollers and dogs and tantalizing smells. Music drifts from the stage. Friends stop to chat. And throughout the weekend, there is a feeling of hope.

May 17-18:  13th Annual Virginia Beer Festival, Town Point Park. This is one of the most popular Beer Festivals in the mid-Atlantic Region and promises to be a day full of good beer, good friends, and good fun. Spend the afternoon sampling beer from all over the world. International premium beers, hand crafted domestics and local brews comprise a selection of over 125 tap handles. The event features live music, great food and, of course, great beer.
Hours:  2pm-6pm Daily. Virginia Beer Festival is produced in partnership with Norfolk Festevents and Virginia Arts Festival.


VIRGINIA BEACH
May 16-18:  Beach Music Cruise-In.  On the Beach at 30th Street, at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  Combining bands on the beach and cars on the boardwalk, blends the best of the “oldies” with dancing under the stars in a jam-packed blast to the past!  Settle into the sand as the top Beach Music bands from up and down the East Coast descend on the Virginia Beach oceanfront in a nostalgic salute to the “good old days” of cool cars and hot tunes.  Stroll the boardwalk to view classic cars, hot rods, antiques, and more.  A three-day series of free concerts is presented on a stage built right on the beach at 30th Street.  Evening concerts on Friday give way to a full day of entertainment on Saturday and more daytime concerts on Sunday.
The car show feature turns the boardwalk into a local version of “Route 66,” with cars and trucks from yesterday and today competing for trophies and Best in Show cash prizes.  The car show will be on Saturday, May 17, from 10:00am-4:00pm.

May 17:  Town Center Corvette Showcase.  Town Center, Virginia Beach.  The Town Center Corvette Showcase is a premier classic car show featuring one of the most impressive collections of Corvettes of yesterday and today ever assembled.  Participants showcase their vehicles and compete for cash prizes and trophies in various categories. The Town Center Corvette Showcase is open to both individual car owners as well as car clubs. There will be a nominal registration fee for participants but will be free for spectators.  The Pre-Registration fee is $20 per vehicle/$25 per vehicle day of the Showcase. A portion of the entry fees will benefit local Virginia Beach charities.

May 17: 11th Annual International Neptune Fest Wine Festival.  Neptune's Park, 31st St. Atlantic Ave. Oceanfront, VB. Save the packing, the passports, and the jetlag...Travel the world with Neptune Festival’s International Spring Wine Festival!  31st Street Park is transformed into a hub of tasting stations from around the world with wines from 9 countries, each featuring blends and styles that are sure to ignite the traveler in you.
With the Atlantic Ocean as your backdrop, grab your tickets and let your palate do the travelling as you enjoy an afternoon of live music and good company!  12:00 - 5:00 pm

May 17-18:  Pirate Party on the Beach.  17th Street Park at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  This family-friendly event features two days of activities designed to bring out the “pirate” in everyone!  Costume contests, games, a treasure hunt, pirate re-enactors, and movie on the beach all combine to celebrate those scallywags we all wish we could be: pirates!
On Saturday dress like a pirate and enter the costume contest!  Also on Saturday, participate in Cap’n Pete’s Treasure Hunt at 5:30pm and then settle in the sand at 7:45pm for the animated film “Pirates: Band of Misfits” – to be shown on a giant screen, right on the beach!
On both days, enjoy arts and crafts and displays by participating museum organizations like the Old Coast Guard Station and Mariner's Museum.
Other activities throughout the weekend include bandana-making, face-painting, storytelling, weapons demonstrations, and strolling entertainers.
On Sunday, enter your team in the Pirates Challenge, which will test your skill in several physical challenges, all pirate-themed.  Winning teams receive cash prizes and trophies!  There is an entry fee for teams in the Pirates Challenge.

May 18:  The Summer Salutation Music & Arts Festival.  Local Artists, Happy Hour, Local Vendors, 2 pm - 12 am.  Live Music by: Woodwork, The Reef, Invisible Landscapes, The Special Guests, Kings of Ukelele, No Dreads.

PORTSMOUTH
May 15: Chillin' at the Pavilion - The Next Measure. nTelos Wireless Pavilion, 5 - 8 pm. Join us, Thursdays in May for good times, good people and live music on the Pavilion Plaza. The Chillin' at the Pavilion events are FREE and open to the public. Parking is also FREE in all City of Portsmouth parking garages and lots. Concessions will be open with food and beverage options as well. Enjoy live music on the water with friends as you wind down from your busy workweek and prepare for the weekend ahead.

May 17: Family Movies on the Lawn presents Frozen (PG). nTelos Wireless Pavilion, gates open at 7:30 pm. Join us at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion, Saturday's in May for some quality family time at the "FAMILY MOVIES ON THE LAWN" movie series. This event is FREE and open to the public. Parking is also FREE in all City of Portsmouth parking garages and lots. Although the movies begin at dusk, attendees are encouraged to arrive early to find a good viewing spot on the lawn. Blankets and sand chairs are recommended. Concessions will be open with food and beverage options as well.


CHESAPEAKE
May 15-18: Chesapeake Jubilee, Chesapeake City Park.  This year's event features music from Uncle Kracker, Colt Ford and the fun and exciting Roots & Boots Tour by country music superstars Aaron Tippin, Joe Diffie and Sammy Kershaw.  As always, don’t miss our Annual Fireworks Extravaganza produced by the world famous Zambelli Fireworks!  The Jubilee will again host the Annual Chesapeake Kiwanis Club Shrimp Feast and the Annual BBQ Cook-off Competition, sanctioned by the world famous Kansas City Barbeque Society.  In addition to great Music and Food, Amusements of America, one of the nation’s premier carnival operators will be on site with thrilling rides and game. Bring the kids out for what is sure to be a memorable occasion.


HAMPTON
May 17: Plein Air Painting Event at Fort Monroe, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM at Charles H. Taylor. Beautiful and unusual architecture is one on the highlights with the 1834 stone fortress, including moat, the largest in America. Sites include historic Old Point Comfort Lighthouse, Chapel of the Centurion with Tiffany windows, Hotel Chamberlin and numerous other structures. The varied landscape includes ancient windswept live oaks, beaches and marshes. $150 prize for first place. $25 ($20 HAL members)

May 17: Buckroe Reggae Fest, Buckroe Beach and Park, 11:00 am - 9:00 pm. Enjoy reggae music on the beach, with vendors, sand soccer, crafts and family activities. Performers include Session Rockers, Mighty Joshua & Zion 5, Tuff Lion, Steve Martinez & The Give Thanks Band, and Natures Child. 

May 17: Downtown Block Party: Hampton's own Fuzz Band. Queens Way, Downtown Hampton, 6:00-11:00 pm. The Fuzz Band met as students at Hampton University and perfected their urban and rock fusion. They have done 3 USO tours and performed with Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill, Chicago, Jill Scott and Outkast. Also featuring the Sean Petersen Experiment. Join the party in Downtown Hampton every Saturday night, with live music on Queens Way between Kingsway and Wine St.
