Thu, June 24 - "Family Great Adventure Series", On the Beach at Virginia Beach, 6:00 pm. Families take part in an interactive adventure that leads them to various sites along the boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue to unravel a mystery. Sometimes the adventures involve games and contests right on the beach. During each adventure, participants can dress up as characters, use “brain and brawn” to win the contest at hand, and settle into the sand for a family-friendly movie shown on a giant inflatable screen on the beach! Thu, July 24 - “The Summer Stars”, 8:00 pm, Chesapeake Public Schools Planetarium, 310 Shea Dr., Chesapeake, VA. The wonders of the summer sky will be the topic of this program. We will examine the constellations of summer and some of the mythology associated with these stars. The program will also examine some of the astronomical objects located in the summer sky and demonstrate methods of locating them with a small telescope or binoculars. Shells is a children's musical duo comprised of Cindy Kays and Shelly Craig Potter. Fri-Sun, July 25-27 -  A Midsummer Fantasy Festival - "Moon Take Thy Flight" Performance Art/Theater in the Park.  Town Point Park, Norfolk.  As an encore to last summer’s memorable presentation of “Tempest”, VSC and Norfolk Festevents will present an immersive and participatory community performance arts festival that will re-imagine Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream within in a series of at least 5 temporary public art installations. Over a period of 5 days, commissioned artists, musicians & designers will work with the greater Norfolk and Hampton Roads community to construct 5 unique environments using reapportioned materials from Norfolk’s shipping industries. The Festival will culminate with a 3-day interactive performance series of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This non-linear reinvention of Shakespeare’s classic invites patrons to “choose their own adventure,” interacting with professional performers & installations according to their own imagination.  The public art installations will be open for public viewing and interaction before, during and after the performances. Sat, July 26 -  The Mid-Atlantic Hermit Crab Challenge.  On the Beach at 30th Street, at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  The Crab is King at this one-of-a-kind event that’s fun for the whole family!  Preliminary hermit crab races lead to the Crustacean 500, where the winner is awarded the “Order of the Mercury Claw” trophy.  Crabs race on a specially-designed circular track, where all the “crabtestants” are placed in the center.  At the sound of the starting horn, crabs scurry to the outer ring of the track.  Whichever claw crosses the line first wins.  It’s the survival of the “crabbiest!”  Aside from 1st, 2nd, And 3rd Place winners, special trophies are also awarded for the Friendliest Crab, Biggest Crab, Shyest Crab, Most Unique Crab Display, Prettiest Crab Shell, Most Athletic Crab, and Most Traveled Crab.  There are no fees for entering the Mid-Atlantic Hermit Crab Challenge; the event is free for both participants and spectators.  Registration begins at 9:30am and all participants must be registered by noon in order to race.
