Tue-Sun, July 29-Aug 3 - The Mystical Arts of Tibet, The American Theater, 125 E Mellen St., Hampton, VA. The Drepung Loseling Monastery monks return to The American Theatre for a week of reflection and inspiration. The monks will create a sand-painted mandala. Millions of grains of sand will be laid into place on a flat platform. The mandala will be deconstructed during the closing ceremony, half the sand will be distributed to the audience, while the remainder is carried to a nearby body of water.

Join Private James Cook, portrayed by Greg Eatroff, for a stroll through four centuries of maritime history and learn about Portsmouth's role in the Civil War. Thu, July 31 - “The Summer Stars”, 8:00 pm, Chesapeake Public Schools Planetarium, 310 Shea Dr., Chesapeake, VA. The wonders of the summer sky will be the topic of this program. We will examine the constellations of summer and some of the mythology associated with these stars. The program will also examine some of the astronomical objects located in the summer sky and demonstrate methods of locating them with a small telescope or binoculars. Did you know that Portsmouth is the ninth official Coast Guard City in the nation? Join us as we celebrate the 224th birthday of the United States Coast Guard. On August 4, 1790, The Revenue Cutter Service (the precursor to the Coast Guard) was established to watch over the coast of our young republic. Get your hands on craft activities, your eyes into historic scenery and your ears in to sweet musical sea shanties as we explore the history of the Coast guard from the Federal Period through War World II. Sat/Sun, Aug 2/3 - Hampton Cup Regatta, spectator area opens at 10 am, racing begins between 11 am - 12 pm and ends about 5 pm, Mill Creek, East Mercury Bridge at Fort Monroe, Hampton, VA.  Hydroplane boat racing, a children's area, food vendors, bay education, and environmental exhibits. Weekend festivities include food and beverage vendors, souvenir programs, children's area, and racing-enthusiast clothing and collectibles. Lawn chairs are highly encouraged as bleacher seating is extremely limited. Attendees are also encouraged to bring pop-up tents or umbrellas for shade; however coolers, pets, bikes, and skateboards are not permitted.
