Sat, Sep 20 - Olde Towne Chalk Challenge, nTelos Wireless Pavilion, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Artists and “budding-artists” gather to turn the plaza into an impromptu canvas of color! Artist registration will be set up at the front gate, and art will be displayed throughout. At the Olde Towne Chalk Challenge, participants draw four by four foot chalk drawings on the plaza. This year’s theme is “The Wizard of Oz.” Whether it be Glinda the Good Witch, The Scarecrow, Flying Monkeys, Dorothy and Toto, The Lion or The Tin Man, this year’s theme will no doubt inspire all of our artists to turn the nTelos Wireless Pavilion Plaza into a dynamic and colorful world of fantasy! All Olde Towne Chalk Challenge participants are encouraged to incorporate the theme in their work! Competitors will complete chalk drawings to be evaluated by a panel of judges. Judges will score the drawings according to criteria such as composition, use of color, adherence to theme, and creativity. There will be three competitive divisions: Amateur, Professional, and Youth. The Youth division will be for ages 12-16. Children 11 and under will be invited to draw for fun in a separate area. Trophies and CASH prizes will be awarded for each division. Winners will be announced at 4:30pm. All participants must register by 1:00pm to qualify for the competition. All drawings must be completed by 3:30pm to be eligible for prizes. Advance registration for the Olde Towne Chalk Challenge is not required but can done at www.pavilionconcerts.com. There is no fee to participate, but it is recommended that artists bring their own chalk.

There are villains (this time pirates), surfer boys, a beautiful mermaid, a talking octopus, and a legendary movie star. It doesn’t make a lot of sense but it will be a lot of fun with the audience joining in on a pirate shout-out contest and a big dance at the finale. The highlight is four-foot high talking Blackbeard head that tells the story of one of history’s most infamous pirates.
