Now-Jan 19 - MacArthur on Ice: Outdoor Ice Skating In Downtown Norfolk. There’s only one place to skate outdoors during the holidays at MacArthur Center, where you’ll always find something special. Bring the family, bring your friends and enjoy the best skating extravaganza Norfolk’s ever seen. Now-Jan 20 - Winter Extravaganza Carnival, MacArthur Center, Downtown Norfolk. Enjoy our outdoor Winter Carnival featuring nine family-friendly rides. Located outside next to MacArthur On Ice, the Winter Carnival will be open Thursday through Sunday until the kids are out of school, at which time it will be open seven days a week. The cost is $1.25 for a single ticket, $25 for 25 tickets or $40 for 50 tickets. Rides include: 55-foot-tall, LED-lit Ferris Wheel, 20-foot-tall Fun Slide, Tilt-a-Whirl, Spinning Monkeys, Helicopters, Red Baron Airplanes, Rio Grande Train, Spinning Tea Cups, Ocean Rage.

Now-Feb 2 - Oceanfront Ice Park, Rudee Loop, Virginia Beach. Ice skate at the Oceanfront to holiday tunes and a sea breeze. The Ice Park will provide a full array of events and activities highlighted by special demonstrations and a holiday themed carnival area for the kids! Admission to the Ice Park is $12 for individuals and $45 for families (up to 5 people) and includes rental skates and unlimited skating for the evening. Skating is open to everyone age 4 and up! Now-Sun, Mar 29 - Winter Orchid Display 2015, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, 6700 Azalea Garden Rd., Norfolk. Don’t miss the opportunity to see beautiful blooming orchids in the Norfolk Botanical Garden Tropical House. Many of the orchids provided by the Tidewater Orchid Society, and Old Dominion University ODU_sig_idea_fullcolor ODU Arthur and Phyllis Kaplan Orchid Conservatory and Research Greenhouse. This winter exhibit is FREE with regular Garden admission.


Tue, Jan 6 - Twelfth Night, Francis Land House, 6-9:00 pm, 3131 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach. Costumed interpreters portray the Lands family as they enjoy the Christian Feast of the Epiphany. Dancing, authentic food, live music.


Wed-Sat - LAST WEEK  Bruce Munro: Light at the Hermitage, 4 - 9:00 pm, The Hermitage Museum and Gardens, 7637 North Shore Road, Norfolk. Munro conveys his love of experimentation through flickering fluorescent tubes, LED-lit water bottles, Fresnel lenses reminiscent of owl’s eyes, and an inventive reuse of materials. During the exhibit, visitors will wander the Hermitage forest, gardens, boardwalk, and the shoreline of the Lafayette River as they are guided by Munro’s interactive displays. The museum will also house two pieces, a prototype of a building Munro hopes to create and a permanent suspended artwork in the front foyer. $15 Non-Members, $12 Members, Children (6-12), and Active-Duty Military.

Fri-Sun, Jan 9-11 - Grand Opening Celebration Slover Library, 235 East Plume Street, Norfolk. The new Slover Library officially opens at 10 a.m. January 9, 2015 with the First Book Checkout ceremony with Mayor Paul D. Fraim, Jane Batten, major donors and the Slover Library Foundation. There is a Grand Opening celebration weekend planned January 10 and 11. The library hours for the celebration are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. An energetic American publisher is in search of the lost love letters of an early nineteenth century poet. Under a false name, Lewis rents a room in a mansion from Juliana Borderau, a former lover of the dead writer. Overseeing the eerie mansion is Juliana’s near-psychotic niece, Tina, who mistrusts the publisher from the very onset. It soon becomes clear to Lewis that the mansion harbors horrible secrets, however, he intends to collect the lost letters at any cost.

An original musical cabaret featuring the music of the stage and screen. Sat, Jan 10 - College Concert Series featuring: University of Virginia HullaBahoos All male A Cappella, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, 7:30 pm, 201 Market Street, Virginia Beach. The Hullabahoos were founded in 1987, when some guys got together and said “Hey, let’s sing…and wear robes while we do it.” So they did. And they still do. Dancing with the Stars, ABC’s leading entertainment show, is bringing a one-of-a-kind touring production to the Ferguson Center! The all-new DANCING WITH THE STARS: LIVE! tour will feature a cast of the television show’s most popular competitors, treating audiences to exciting and romantic performances. Wed, Jan 14 - From Tidewater to the Northern Lights, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, 7:30 pm, Miller Studio Theatre, 201 Market Street, Virginia Beach. Ken Waldman has drawn on his 25 years in Alaska to produce poems, stories, and fiddle tunes that combine into a performance uniquely his. Nine CDs mix Appalachian-style string-band music with original poetry. Here at the Sandler Center, Ken will be joined by a pair of multi-instrumentalists, Brian Vollmer from New York state, and Dan Margolies, a History professor at Virginia Wesleyan. The evening will appeal to anyone who enjoys traditional string-band music, smart poetry, acclaimed storytelling, or Alaska. There will be four student matinees of “From Tidewater to the Northern Lights” geared for younger audiences, grades 3-8. These shows will be offered January 14-15 at both 10:00am and 12:00pm. Thu, Jan 15 - Out of the Box Music Series: Bobby “BlackHat” Walters, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, 6:00 pm, Miller Studio Theatre, 201 Market Street, Virginia Beach. Fri, Jan 16-Feb 8 - The Little Theatre of Virginia Beach presents: The Rainmaker by N. Richard Nash, Fri/Sat 8:00 pm, Sun 2:30 pm, 550 Barberton Drive, Virginia Beach. Directed by Carolyn Collings. At the time of a paralyzing drought in the West we discover a girl whose father and two brothers are worried as much about her potential future as an old maid as they are about their dying cattle. The brothers try every possible scheme to marry her off, but without success. Nor is there any sign of relief from the dry heat, when suddenly from out of nowhere appears a picaresque, sweet-talking man with quite the sales pitch. Claiming to be a “rainmaker,” the man promises to bring rain, for $100. It’s a silly idea, but the rainmaker is so refreshing and persistent and optimistic, that the family finally consents. Meanwhile the rainmaker also turns his magic on the girl, and persuades her that she has a very real beauty of her own. She believes it, just as her father believes the fellow can actually bring rain. Rain does come, and so does love.

Sat, Jan 17 - Company Stefanie Batten Bland, The American Theater, 7:30 pm,  125 E Mellen St, Hampton. Stefanie Batten Bland, recently named 2014 Joffrey Ballet “Choreographer of Color” recipient, has family roots that are a mix of Creole, African American, Native American and Scots-Irish. She has lived in three countries, speaks four languages and created her dance troupe, Company Stefanie Batten Bland, in 2008 in France so that she might better investigate the human condition and our relationship within the natural world.
