Now-Jan 20 - Winter Extravaganza Carnival, MacArthur Center, Downtown Norfolk. Enjoy our outdoor Winter Carnival featuring nine family-friendly rides. Located outside next to MacArthur On Ice, the Winter Carnival will be open Thursday through Sunday until the kids are out of school, at which time it will be open seven days a week. Now-Sun, Mar 29 - Winter Orchid Display 2015, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, 6700 Azalea Garden Rd., Norfolk. Don’t miss the opportunity to see beautiful blooming orchids in the Norfolk Botanical Garden Tropical House. Thu, Jan 15 - Third Thursday at The Chrysler Museum of Art, 5 - 10:00 pm, One Memorial Place, Norfolk. In the Museum, we are hosting educators and those who love to learn for a night full of fun. Peruse tables set up by area organizations such as the Virginia Aquarium, and Nauticus, and enjoy performances and presentations by our partners. Find out how you can bring these organizations and others to your or your child’s classroom. Performances and demonstrations by these groups will take place throughout the night. At the Glass Studio, Suzanne Peck will be the lead glass artist in a program she’s calling Radiant Intensity, an exploration of the interconnectivity of the body through thermal imaging, glass and movement. Music will be provided by Joe Hamm with 3 am. This evening is free for Museum Members and children, $5 for all others. There is a cash bar at both venues.

Wed, Jan 21 - Norfolk Society of Arts Lecture Series: Glenn Adamson, Chrysler Museum of Art, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm, One Memorial Place, Norfolk. The next speaker in the Norfolk Society of Arts lecture series will be Glenn Adamson. The director of New York’s Museum of Arts and Design will be speaking on The Present and Future: Art Glass in the 21st Century. Adamson believes glass art’s long history of aesthetic brilliance is now being matched by great ideas, and he sees a path where glass artists will find both commercial success and critical acclaim. Things get underway with a coffee klatch at 10:30 a.m. and the free lecture gets underway at 11 a.m. in the Kaufman Theater.

Join Calvin Pearson, founder and president of Project 1619 Inc. and president of the Phenix High School Alumni Association, along with Olivia James Cherry, Phenix High School Class of 1946, and other graduates as they recount their experiences attending Hampton’s last segregated all-black high school, located on the campus of what was then known as Hampton Institute (now Hampton University). Wed, Jan 14 - From Tidewater to the Northern Lights, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, 7:30 pm, Miller Studio Theatre, 201 Market Street, Virginia Beach. Ken Waldman has drawn on his 25 years in Alaska to produce poems, stories, and fiddle tunes that combine into a performance uniquely his. Nine CDs mix Appalachian-style string-band music with original poetry. Here at the Sandler Center, Ken will be joined by a pair of multi-instrumentalists, Brian Vollmer from New York state, and Dan Margolies, a History professor at Virginia Wesleyan. The evening will appeal to anyone who enjoys traditional string-band music, smart poetry, acclaimed storytelling, or Alaska. At the time of a paralyzing drought in the West we discover a girl whose father and two brothers are worried as much about her potential future as an old maid as they are about their dying cattle. The brothers try every possible scheme to marry her off, but without success. Nor is there any sign of relief from the dry heat, when suddenly from out of nowhere appears a picaresque, sweet-talking man with quite the sales pitch. Claiming to be a “rainmaker,” the man promises to bring rain, for $100. It’s a silly idea, but the rainmaker is so refreshing and persistent and optimistic, that the family finally consents. Meanwhile the rainmaker also turns his magic on the girl, and persuades her that she has a very real beauty of her own. She believes it, just as her father believes the fellow can actually bring rain. Rain does come, and so does love.

Sat, Jan 24 - The Fuzz Band, The American Theater, 8:00 pm, 125 E Mellen St, Hampton. 2014 Veer Music Award winners for Best R&B, The Fuzz Band, whose sound is a fusion of Urban & Rock music, met and formed while attending Hampton University. Originally created as the house band for Fuzzy Wednesday, Virginia’s longest running open mic, the band soon began collaborating on original music and developing their own sound. Performing first at local venues and colleges, the band soon released Without Boundaries, followed by Collision, Change, and a Change of the Guards. The younger son of a working-class Jewish family in Montreal, Duddy Kravitz yearns to make a name for himself in society. This film chronicles his short and dubious rise to power, as well as his changing relationships with family and friends.
